Taxes

This is our first year filing as a married couple. I get a small discount through work to use H & R Block and I'm considering going that route instead of trying to do them on our own like we usually do. Who does their own taxes versus having them done by someone else? Should I just give it a shot?

Re: Taxes

  • I did ours through H&R Block's free online program, like I do every year.  Filing married isn't much different than filing single.
  • I do ours through turbotax. You can enter all of your information and see where you stand prior to paying. If you go through this link, it will save you 35%.
  • To clarify, my concern was less with the marital status changing and more with all the other things we now have that we didn't in the past along with the change in status(I have a 1099, there's student loan interest stuff, etc.). I was thinking it might be more difficult but I'm going to go through the TurboTax one I've used in the past and if I get stuck then I'll decide what to do. Thanks for the link!

  • I used to do mine TurboTax, but DH already had an accountant when I met him, so we bring ours to her.

  • We have used TaxAct every year and it wasn't any more difficult filing married with student loan and mortgage interest.

  • We use TurboTax - even with us having a kid, daycare/FSA, mortgage interest, student loans, etc.. it's super easy.

  • We use Turbotax too.  It's really easy.  Our personal finance professor told us back in college that of all the options (H&R block, personal accountant, etc.), turbotax has been shown to be the most reliable and accurate so that's why we started using it.

Ditto. Well, H would ditto since he does them.
  • Thanks for the input. I went through the TurboTax program tonight and it was very easy but I'm nervous because we're getting more back than we ever have before and it freaks me out. I'm paranoid that it's wrong for some reason.

Well now that you're married, filing jointly and you have student loan interest, you should be getting more back.
