  • The weather should be in the 50's at the end of April. Although, it could also snow then also!

Are you driving up here? Do you want to stay downtown?

Can't help you on country bars!

  • I just moved to Chicago, so I can't help you on the weather in April. As far as where to stay, you can usually find hotels downtown for around $150 a night. Try hotels.com, etc. or you could stay in the suburbs for much cheaper. Our favorites when we were traveling here were Hotel Felix in River North, Hotel Blake in the South Loop and Allegro Hotel in the Loop.

As far as country bars, the biggest/best is Joe's on Weed. www.joesbar.com (I think). They have huge acts come through, Diercks, Phil Vassar, etc. but also lots of nights that just have a cover charge without a huge act. Definitely check them out.

  • Weather is usually 50ish but it can be quite rainy.  If possible, I would push it back to June or September when the weather is nice and more predictable.

Palmer House is nice.  You can sign up for an alert for when the prices are discounted, but the lowest I've seen is $119.

Aquarium, Willis Tower skydeck/boxes, bar in the Hancock for an expensive drink with good view, Dana Hotel- Vertigo for outdoor firepit with city views, walk the lake front, walk the river walk, architectural tour.

    No ideas on country bars.

    Have fun!

  • I second Joe's for a country bar.  It's fun and close to public transportation.

I'd recommend staying downtown and using priceline.com to get a good rate.

As for other attractions, if you've never been, like pp's suggested: Hancock Observatory for drinks and the view, Sears/Willis Tower, Millenium Park, Ferris Wheel ride at Navy Pier, etc.

Will you drive?  My H went to school at SIU-C and I've taken the amtrak trip to So. IL dozens of times.  It's really easy and I'd definitely recommend.  However, the earlier you buy tickets, the cheaper.  Also, if you have the flexibility, check the weekly sales, often if you can leave on a Thurs or Mon, you can save some money.

  • Definitely use priceline "name your own price."   My family usually gets 4 star hotels for under $75 a night (usually using "river north/magnificent mile for the areas on priceline's map).   www.betterbidding.com is a website you can use to see what hotels both hotels.com and priceline have available, and for what price.
  • Late April is generally pleasant, although it could potentially be anywhere from 40 to 80. Check the forecast before you go, and pack accordingly. Bring layers!

Re: attractions - it depends on what you enjoy. We have world-renowned museums, small museums, hockey games, baseball games, skyscrapers with cafes and lounges at the top, boutique shopping, fabulous restaurants (do NOT eat at any of the chains!!), open bus tours, architecture tours, foodie tours, boat rides, ferris wheel rides...

The one thing I don't think we have is country bars. Or, maybe we do. It's not my scene so I can't tell you.

  • Southern bars? Houndstooth Saloon in Lakeview and maybe check out the Horseshoe bar on Lincoln Ave. I've heard that there is a Southern dancing bar in Evanston, but I imagine you would need a car. Maybe if you google it, you can find something?

A fun date and a great view of the city is to go up to the signature room at the John Hancock tower. You can order dinner there or you can just have some dessert and sit next to the window and enjoy the view. It's beautiful.   Don't forget to get some Chicago style pizza!!

  • Also, there are horse and carriage rides downtown from Water Tower Place and on Friday and Saturday nights at the Drake hotel, there is live jazz music and you can dance! You just have to buy a drink! Have fun.
