Nice suburbs near Harrisburg

DH & I are going to be working in Harrisburg in a couple of months and would like to live near by.  We have been told to look at suburbs outside of the city limits.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks!

Re: Nice suburbs near Harrisburg

  • Mechanicsburg or Camp Hill would be my choices. I'm a bigger fan of the "west shore" area which is west of the Susquehanna River. Plus Mechanicsburg has Wegmans - the best supermarket in the world (IMO).

I live south of the area but work up there.

  • Great!  thanks for the advice.  I have heard good things about both areas.  Is the West shore better then the East shore?
  • I agree with the PP about Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill, and I would add in Enola as well.  It is right near 81 and on 15 so quick access to where ever you will be going in Harrisburg.

  • Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill are good areas.

Some areas of Colonial Park arent bad and Hershey really isnt that far from Harrisburg.

As far as the "East vs West" debate. Some people who live on one "shore" of the Susquehanna feel that their side is superior. Each side has its own perks IMO. I grew up on the West and now live on the East but I am really the minority. One thing you will find is that people who are faithful to their "side" would rather cut off a limb than cross the river haha.

  • I moved up here from FL and have lived in Mechanicsburg and now Camp Hill.  I like both areas because they are close to shopping, etc., without being too city-esque.  I like Camp Hill a bit more because of where in Camp Hill I'm located--I can jump on 83, the Turnpike, 15, etc in minutes.

When we were looking, we were pretty much limited to the West Shore due to my stepson being about an hour from here...we didn't want to move further from him.  Like pp said, I've heard good things about Hershey and other areas outside of Harrisburg.

    Good luck in your search!

  • I grew up in Mechanicsburg and live there now as well (after moving out of the area for awhile). I think its one of the nicest suburban areas around Harrisburg for many of the reasons already mentioned like amenities and easy access to transportation. Also some of the best public schools if thats of interest to you. Its very close to downtown Hbg and there are park and rides around if you want to take the bus instead (a lot of professionals do it so its not a scary public bus thing!). Parts of Harrisburg City are nice if want to experience a city lifestyle. You need to be careful about the location and I wouldnt recommend BUYING property in Hbg, but renting for a couple years before you choose a location to settle more long term is an increasingly popular choice for young professionals around here.

  • I live on the East Shore and love it. I live in the Central Dauphin School District, which is one of the top districts in the area. I enjoy the diversity that the East Shore has to offer, I live in Lower Paxton township and LOVE it. I am 8-10 minutes from the city and there are lots of great apartments in the area.  While the "white shore" can be nice, the traffic is miserable. Siiting in the traffice on15 waiting for the lights to change during rush hour is horrible and frustrating.
