I've mentioned this before (I think) but figured I'd mention it again since it starts tonight. IBM is debuting their new super computer, affectionately named Watson, on Jeopardy at 7:30 pm. This is the first day of a 3 day tournament where Watson will be competing against the two most successful Jeopardy champions (the longest running winner and the one who won the most money).
Watson is a computer designed to answer questions, and if you've ever watched Jeopardy, you know that the questions aren't exactly straightforward. I've seen some of the initial footage and it's worth watching, as it's pretty impressive! Some of you may remember when Deep Blue (IBM's earlier super computer) beat the world champion chess player (who then threw a hissy fit and accused IBM of cheating, but that's a whole other story...). This is essentially the next step in computer capabilities. Anyway, just thought I'd share.
Re: Jeopardy & IBM: Updated with link
No because the nintendo or game computers already know all of the answers, they're programmed into the game chip. Watson will be hearing the questions for the first time when the contestants do standing there on stage, it will have to voice activate searches, and rule out data to come up with the correct answer just as fast or faster than Ken Jennings and the other guy.
It would be like you standing there with a laptop on Jeopardy, reading the question, searching and then answering, but Watson can do it all simultaneously because he's so smart.
Totally legitimate question Sikes, and awesome answer Ashlee! This is exactly what the difference is. Also, one of the things that makes this so impressive is the format of Jeopardy questions. Watson is capable of understanding all of the nuances (puns, double meanings, etc.) of Jeopardy questions, analyzing the available information and answering accurately.
I am really interested to see how he performs since in the footage from the testing stages (which is out on youtube somewhere) he occasionally crashes and burns. It's actually pretty funny. I'm glad to hear you're as excited about this as I am Ashlee!
How is it that my BABY is going to be 3?

Really looking forward to this!
Although, it is in keeping with previous thoughts of mine - Judgement Day is on the horizon. heh
I'm really glad that so many of you are planning to watch it! Yay!
