Looking to moving soon

Hey ya'll ...

H and I are looking to moving soon, and NC is one of our states we are interested in. Can ya'll give me some of the best cities and areas to live in?

**Edited to finish typing my post ... lol**

Re: Looking to moving soon

  • Do you already have jobs? What fields are you in? What do you like to do for fun? City or rural?

The main areas would be Charlotte, the Triangle and the Triad. If you like the mountains, Asheville is very cute town. If you like the beach you might want to consider Wilmington.

I have lived in Durham (Triangle area), Beaufort (on the coast) and Greensboro (Triad area). It has been awhile since I lived in Durham or Beaufort. Beaufort was nice, but I felt like it was a nice place to retire, not somewhere to live at this point in my life.

Overall we like living in Greensboro. It is in the middle of everything. We can take a day trip or short weekend trip to the mountains or the beach. We have taken day trips to local wineries. It is easy to get to Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham. There are lots of parks/trails nearby. We like going to NCAA basketball events at the coliseum.

  • It's really hard to answer this question without knowing what kind of lifestyle you'd like.  We love living in the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) as it's big enough to offer good food/events, but not overwhelming.  We were living in NYC prior and looking for something a little slower :)

If you clarify, I'm sure others will be willing to chime in!

  • Again, it depends on your career/lifestyle/etc but I live in Asheville and I really like it. DH and I just moved here from Oregon in December and it's been a good fit for us so far. In the past few years we've lived in TN, MD, OR and now NC but this is already probably my favorite place that we've lived.

It's a really laid back town and it's right in the mountains so there's lots to do outside. There's also a really big arts community if you're into that sort of thing- DH designs and makes furniture so that was a big draw for us in choosing Asheville. That said, the job market here (like anywhere else) isn't the best so I definitely wouldn't move here without having something lined up first.

  • Thanks for the posts...

I guess I should have clarified more ... H is in the medical field, so he could get a job pretty much anywhere and I dont have a specific career, but would do best in a office/receptionist type position.

We love the beach and love the mountains. We ski, dive, etc. We are very active outdoors.

  • Well you won't find diving in Asheville because it's western North Carolina, but skiing isn't far away and people here love their outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling, kayaking, rafting, ziplining, and rock climbing are very popular here. There's an abundance of private doctor's offices and specialty practice offices as well as one very large hospital so your hubby would be covered. And really you're going to find receptionist positions in any town you go to. Asheville is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but as I said you would be on the western part of the state rather than the eastern so there is no coast. It's a very eclectic town and I absolutely LOVE living here so I would highly suggest it

With those notes, it sounds like you should probably go for mid-state (Piedmont Triad - Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point or Triangle - Raleigh, Durham, Cary) where you can be relatively close to both.  I live in a small town out in the country between Greensboro and  Burlington.  We're like 3 hours from the beach and two hours from the mountains (though if you're really wanting to ski, snowshoe is like 5 hours away and Winterplace is like 2 1/2 - 3hrs).

I will say that when DH and I went diving in Cozumel our instructor did mention that there's some excellent diving off the NC Coast - sunken ships and what not, but we haven't gone diving since then, so I'm not sure what all is out there.
