Anyone use someone other than Cox or Verizon?
We currently have Cox, but we've had outages 5 times in the last 2 weeks, each lasting a minimum of 2 hours. It was out for 8 hours last Saturday, and we had nothing all night last night. Works at 6am before I go to work... but that's not exactly useful. I call to report them, and instead I get technicians that insist that some connection in the house is wrong and won't actually let me report it as an outage. So, I'm in the market for a new option.
Fios hasn't come to our neighborhood yet, so that's out. Does anyone have the wireless internet providers, like Clear? We need it to be fast enough to stream video, so I'm not sure if it'll work or if we're just stuck with Cox for now.
TIA!
Re: Internet service providers
You've probably already checked this, but is your equipment OK? Is the Internet connectivity light on your modem solid (modem is OK) or flashing (modem or connection is bad)? Modems don't last forever, and they eventually wear out because they are on all the time. Do you have a router? That could be the problem too. The wireless part of our router stopped working, so we replaced it with a newer one.
If all of that is OK, there could be a problem somewhere with your physical cable line. A couple of years ago, my landscapers cut through part of the cable on the outside of my building. TV still worked, but my Internet was very very slow. So Cox came and replaced the broken cable.

The power light on the modem is on, but the receive button just flashes away when it's not working. I know it's not a modem issue, because it always comes back on its own. The router is also not the issue, as we can still connect to other computers and our backup drive wirelessly. The cable itself can't be the problem, because our cable TV channels still work just fine. It's purely an outage in the internet service itself. They actually admitted last Saturday that there was an outage somewhere and they had technicians fixing it. 3 hours later, we had internet again. I wish it was an equipment issue, but it's definitley not.
Right, there could be an issue with the physical cable somewhere outside of your responsibility. It is possible for your TV to work and Internet not to work.

We had a similar problem back when we had Cox. It took 3 techs to come out before one of them looked at the lines outside of the house-turns out a squirrel (we have SOOO many around here for some reason) had snacked on our internet wire at the telephone pole. When the wind would come through it would either connect/disconnect like an electrical short- and yes it would seem to only be connected at crazy hours according to Cox's log on the modem. Maybe have someone thoroughly check all of the wires outside- Good Luck!
My husband is a level 2 technician specifically for internet problems at cox, and he can help you. Send me an email at kelly dot memoli at gmail dot com if you want some troubleshooting help from him...or he can look at your account in the office tomorrow and see what he can do. When you call in you get no-bodys sometimes who just pass the buck.
He said one thing you should definitely do is to power off your computer(s), and then to unplug your modem and router for 1 minute. Then plug in your modem, then router, and then turn on the computer, and see if your connectivity is better. The other thing you can do is check your IP address, (if you don't know how, go to www.ipchicken.com) and it will show you your ip... and see if you are getting a 169. as the 1st number. If thats the case there is a DNS issue and he can look into that for you as well.
