I am interested in putting together a nice porch garden this summer. We have a very sunny porch with a decent amount of space. I would like some herbs that smell nice with some green plants and flowers. Suggestions? It is starting to get warm here so I can start planning.
Re: a porch garden
I would start with thinking of what herbs you use in cooking, and see if those will grow in your zone/with your porch conditions.
For us, that means cilantro, basil, rosemary, and mint. (Unfortunately, I'm a serial weed killer and can't seem to get anything to take off on my porch.)
If you wanted to grow flowers that are also "useful," you could try chamomile.
Im looking forward to growing some strawberries...theyre pretty and tasty! getting some home-grown strawberries without the cost at the supermarket...sign me up!
but I agree with pp it depends on what you use in your cooking. I use a lot of basil, parsley, and cilantro so thats what we have!
I tried this last year and failed miserably. The few things that worked for me were tomatoes, parsley, green beans, and chives.
But this was living in Michigan, so between that and my lack of green thumb, things just weren't very functional.
I suggest planting things that are semi-drought tolerant. Containers get a lot hotter and dry out way faster than the soil.
Rosemary, sage and oregano are fairly drought tolerant and like full sun. Drier conditions tend to make the herbs stronger flavored.
For color, I have had good luck with lantana, geraniums, pansies and marigolds in full-sun containers. Also, torenia is supposed to do well.
I've done, peas, tomatoes, rosemary, basil, dill, and lavender and green onions on my porch, the peas were, cool astetically because they are climbers, If I'd had more room I would have done cucumber climbing on the trellis they would look great and they provide a great yield. I loved my little porch garden and It would have looked even better on a real porch instead of my fire escape! Bonus, I saved money by finding all of my planters on free-cycle
