BR: Best Bottles & diapers?

Do any of you moms have any suggestions as to which bottles & diapers are really good and which to avoid?

J's mom is really excited and wants to start buying some small items each week. Since we will not know the gender for a few months, she will have to start with items that are neutral. She wants me to compile a list so I think bottles and diapers (like a pack of each size) are a good place to start.

Re: BR: Best Bottles & diapers?

  • I HIGHLY suggest reading the Baby Bargains Book -- that's where we went for all of our baby needs, and it really did help us narrow down what brands we wanted to look at and what didnt need to bother with, especially when it came around to start thinking about the registry... things could get overwhelming REALLY fast!

Through the book we decided on Dr Browns bottles, and I've been very pleased wih them.

I also prefer Pampers Swaddlers over Huggies, but I'm using Huggies for the first time on Sami now and haven't had any major complaints.

Wipes I do prefer Huggies over Pampers -- Pampers I find to be too wet.

Again, everyone will have their own opinion, and what works for one may not work for another.  And regardless of what you think you'll want, you're probably going to get something else at the shower - diapers, wipes, etc.  And who knows... by going through what you get at the shower, you might be surprised and start liking something you never thought about in the first place.

    Good luck!

  • I second reading the baby bargins book, it rates everything and gives you the pros and cons. I spent weeks reading that book and doing research to compile a list of the items we wanted to register for.

We haven't used them yet obviously but we also chose the Dr Browns bottles based on reviews from baby bargins and reviews from some of my friends who have babies.

  • We obviously haven't used them on our own yet but I went with what I've used nannying. So far we're going with Pampers swaddlers, Pampers sensitive wipes, and Born Free bottles.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • I agree with taking a look at Baby Bargains, it was so helpful to us when we were picking everything out.  I also(and still do) read reviews on Amazon of baby products before I purchased something and they are usually pretty right on.

As far as bottles we don't use them a lot but Dr. Brown's have been awesome.  They were also the only ones he would take when he was little, we tried a bunch.  They also help so much with the little contraptions inside of them that cut down on the amount of air they swallow when drinking.   They are kind of annoying because there are a few part to them and you have to take them apart to wash them but so worth it I feel.

For diapers we use Pampers and loved them.  We used the Sensitive Swaddlers until he was a size 3 and they were great.  We only moved to Pamper's Baby Dry at size 3 because we didn't want to use Dry Max and you can't get Swaddlers without Dry Max once you reach the larger sizes(so annoying!).  We have really liked the Baby Dry as well, the Swaddlers just seem so much softer.

  • I don't have much on bottles because we rarely use them.  We got a 3 pack of Playtex bottles at our shower, the kind you use the inserts with, and those seem to work just fine when we need them. And conveniently, the pump I happened to get was also Playtex, so I can pump directly into the inserts and freeze them...I think it would have been a huge pain if the pump I had wasn't compatible with the bottle system though.

We've used gDiapers for the most part. You have the option of full cloth inserts or they also have disposable inserts which you can either throw in the garbage or flush down the toilet.  We use full cloth and I totally love them.  They are really absorbent, seem way more comfortable than regular diapers, and they have some really cute colors.  We do use disposables for night time and although we usually use a brand from Fred Meyer, I had to buy a pack of Huggies the other night and so far they seem fine.  I'm kind of anti-Pampers because last year they changed their diapers to have this new kind of liner and a lot of moms complained that it gave their children chemical burns.  Pampers took the stance that it was regular diaper rash and the parent's needed to change them more often. Long story short - its not the fear of actual chemical burns that makes me anti-Pampers since obviously not every child had problems, but it was Pamper's response.  I can't support a company that can not only not accept that their product is faulty, but then blames it on the consumer....but thats totally just my opinion. I think either Luvs or Huggies is also owned by Pamper's.

  • Iam pretty sure that Luvs is the late model pampers. Being in Cincinnati, most of the moms around here participate in the diaper tests and panels for P&G. I hear plenty of feedback around here on diapers. Most like swaddlers and prefer baby dry to the dry max. I know they did work out some of the formulation and did take a lot of time to listen to customers after the complaints. I have been buying baby dry and I went with Dr. Browns bottles. I did get some Medela bottles, but I will probably be switching those to Dr. Browns.
  • I honestly don't recommend that you buy a whole bunch of one brand of diaper until you have your baby and see what works best for them. Otherwise, you're going to be returning a whole lotta diapers.

Pampers seem to be a popular suggestion, BUT they gave Ellie a terrible rash. Luvs worked good when she was a newborn, but once she got a little more active, they leaked a lot. Huggies worked great for us for a long time - but they had to be the Little Snugglers/Little Movers line, not the Snug & Dry line. The Snug & Dry leaked like crazy. Currently we are using Target's Up & Up line, and they seem to work really well. We don't have too much trouble with leaks and they fit her really well. Plus, they're like, $10 cheaper a box than Huggies.

As far as wipes go, they're pretty much all the same. I just buy whatever is on sale.

For bottles, we used the Playtex Ventaire, and I liked them because the bottom comes off so they were really easy to clean. We also have a few others, just cheap playtez and nuby ones that we picked up in a bind, and those work fine too. We never had trouble getting Ellie to take a bottle, though. She wasn't picky.
  • I am on the same page on most things as Amelia.  We actually really lucked out and between the diapers we received from the shower and what my mom got, we have not had to buy any diapers and are just getting low now.  I don't 'hate' any of the brands but I like Huggies the best, then pampers, and lastly Luvs.  I don't mind Luvs, they just leak the most.

As far as wipes, I don't have much of a preference.  My boss often buys me wipes in bulk from Cosco but have used others also. I usually buy what I have a coupon for.

I use Medela bottles.  It was simple to just connect them to my pump and fill away.  He was never too picky with bottles however.  He also now uses Avent, since they are what my boss has (I'm a nanny) and since I don't breastfeed/pump anymore, I don't need to drag my stuff back and forth.
