WWYD Oppinions Needed! Poll

Background: We are trying to book our honeymoon for the end of October (only time DH could manage and that I'm not in a wedding!)  My B and SIL are generously giving us our h-moon as our wedding gift.  We got to choose from a few places where their time share works. We decided on 3 options.

The place that I would really like to stay at is out of our price range.  Our 2nd and 3rd are both booked.  We can put ourselves on the wait list.  It could take 3 months to know if we get a spot. Ugh.  BIL suggested a resort that is open.  It's not getting the nicest reviews....But, we're not super picky.... we just want a beach, warm weather and some fun activities.

BIL is trying to book today, and just called. Sigh.

Re: WWYD Oppinions Needed! Poll

  • How bad are the reviews?

DH and I have traveled quite a bit, and have stayed in everything from seedy hotels, to hostels to 5 star resorts.

The resort we stayed at for our honeymoon last month had extremely mixed reviews. Some were glowing, some made it sound like the Bates Motel.    We really didn't have another option there- so,  we went for it.  The resort was FINE!   Yes, it was a little older,  and the rooms were remodeled a couple of years ago and not last month.  People complained about how expensive the food was at the restaurants and how expensive the bar and poolside cafe were.  Hotel establishments are usually more expensive than normal restaurants.

When reading reviews, big redflags would be for major health and safety issues, like mold, had bugs or bedbugs, actual dirty carpets/floors bathrooms.

  • Oh- and could you book the one you know you could get, and still put yourselves on the waitlist for one of your first two choices?
  • I was wondering that too.. but I don't know for sure.

The bad reviews were saying that the service was kind of poor and that the overall feel of the place was older/musty.  :(

The good reviews raved about the beach being amazing and that the food is good.

  • I like to have things set, so I would say go with the one you know you can get, although I don't know how bad the reviews really were.  I would worry about health concerns, but maybe not service because you can always eat other places and will probably spend most of your time on the beach.

If the reveiws are only about service and the resort being older - book it!! Oh well if the service isn't white glove and chances are, you aren't going to be in the room all that much so the older vibe won't really affect you. I realize that it's your HM but you are getting it for free, so I wouldn't be ultra picky.

Unless, like some of the other girls said, the reviews talk about things that are health concerns.

  • One thing I learned while looking at traveladvisor.com is that there are many picky people out there.  I've been to two all-inclusives in the past 5 or so years.  The one in Jamaica I just loved.  It had an average of 3 star reviews.  The stuff that people complain about is just ridiculas!  I then read every single review before going on our honeymoon at a resort in Costa Rica.  Again, there were a ton of bad reviews.  People complained about bugs (hello, you are in the middle of a jungle!) and the beach and the food and the service.  We had no problems at all.  I think that it's just that those who do have a bad experience, whether the hotels fault or their own, are more likely to write a review because they want to vent.  But, since you said yourself that you are not picky, I highly doubt that you will not love wherever you are going.  So, I would go with the one that you know you can book, go in with an open mind and you will be just fine!

  • When you say "it's not getting the nicest reviews" are there any good reviews at all?  or just negative ones?  When we were researching for our honeymoon resort and looking at reviews they were definitely mixed, but more positive than negative for sure.

I agree with everyone else, though.  As long as it's not reviews talking about cockroaches or bedbugs or asbestos, I think you'll be okay.  We also did a timeshare exchange through my aunt for the first week of our HM and it was great.  It certainly wasn't a top-notch hotel like the Grand Hyatt next door to us, but then again we only paid a $230 exchange fee for the whole week in Kauai!  It was very clean and updated and we loved that it was a full condo so we could cook the majority of our meals.

Just curious, where are you going?  I'm excited for you- I think you'll have an awesome time!

  • I don't remember hearing anything about cockroaches, that would have scared me away for sure!  There definitely are some positive reviews- so I think we are going to go for it!  Like DH said, if we can have fun sleeping outside in a tent, sweating on each other, we can have fun anywhere! Haha  He's so positive.  Plus, I read in one review that there is a car rental place nearby and it's easy to drive all over the island- which sounds really fun.  I am feeling more excited now that it feels like we're actually going to get to go!  Oh- and it's Aruba! :)  Fingers crossed that we can get this booked*

  • We went to Aruba too!  You will love it!!!!  If you want I can send you a link to my pictures on facebook (we might have to be friends though, I'll figure that out...)

OH, I wish I could go back right now.
