Am I nuts?

Okay, so there is a post on Family Matters :Who Told this Woman She Was Fit to be a Mother (clicky)

Am I the only one who doesn't really see anything wrong with your child dressing as Madonna (minus the T&T backstory, just commenting on the costume...pretend it were Halloween)?

Re: Am I nuts?

  • As a Halloween costume I don't think it is bad either.

But I truely dispise pagents. So that makes me unsettled

  • I'm pretty sure I tried my d*mnedest to dress like Madonna when I was younger.  Like a Virgin was the first album (yes, album) I bought with my own money, and I was 9 when that came out.

However, I'm also pretty sure that little girl didn't ask her mom to put her in a cone bra so she could look like Madonna without serious prompting.  So I vote icky. Very, very icky.

  • To be honest I wouldn't let my daughter wear that even if it was for Halloween.  I probably wouldn't even if she was 17.  It makes me sick that children are so sexualized now a days.  I honestly think it is a little disgusting that someone would put their child in something like that.  There are so many sick perverts out there that love to look at crap like that.  But that is just my opinion.

  • I saw this episode.  Truthfully, the whole thing kind of makes me want to throw up, not just because of the premature sexual issues, but because of the message sent through pageants that natural physical processes (such as baby teeth falling out) are somehow undesirable and that plastic and fake are better.  Cone-shaped bras do not belong on a child too young to speak clearly, and neither do fake tans, hairpieces, or dental prostheses.  Let's save those for a time when the kid is old enough to decide for themselves.

ETA: Sorry, didn't read the parenthetical statement about discussing the costume itself and not pageants in general.  Here's my opinion on that:  it's still not right.  While I understand the concept in theory, there are a lot of costumes that would be appropriate for an older child or teenager for Halloween that would still not be appropriate for a child under 5.  This definitely qualifies.

  • Maybe it's just because I know the background and think most of those mothers are nuts, but I am not okay with that costume on a toddler.  I think it's the pointy boobs that makes it wrong for me.

I think this is what bothers me most about the costume. If it was a different Madonna look, maybe one where she was more covered up and less of a sex object, then I would be ok with it. I think when I was younger my bff dressed up as Madonna in her like a virgin outfit. The whole punk rock bride thing wouldnt bother me so much.
