    That's what I think. I don't think high schoolers are typically gainfully employeed. I think it's fine to put "first job" or "HS job", but I wouldn't call baby sitting or working at the mall or part time somewhere "gainful employment".

    In my mind I tend to view gainful employment as any job where you have to fill out tax forms and then get money taken out of your paycheck.  =P

    I'd be careful about saying a mall job is not gainful employment.  Many people work at the mall for years or even their whole life.

    Gainfully employed generally means you can support yourself. That generally means working full time, whether it's minimum wage or 6 figures.

    Yup. My MIL has worked full time at Sears for 25 years. I worded it wrong, but in my mind, I was thinking something along the lines of working at Claire's or Jamba Juice for 4 hours a day on weekends. I don't see that as supporting yourself or being gainfully employed.

    Ok, got it.  Yeah, I can see working that little as being iffy on the "gainfully" side!  My dad has worked at Sears for forever, too.  If your MIL is in this area there is a good chance they know each other!
