Very Hungry Caterpillar

I am planning a VHC party for my daughter's first birthday. I have some ideas already, but I thought I would post this to see what other people can come up with. The menu will be planned around the foods in the book. We are having it at a park...

I would love to hear other ideas, menu specifics/decorations/etc just for the sake of brainstorming!

TIA

Re: Very Hungry Caterpillar

  • Friends of ours did a butterfly - bug theme for their daughter's birthday.   The "cake"  was a caterpillar.   The caterpillar cake was a series of brightly colored frosted cupcakes with licorice legs and gumdrop feet.

She also served butterfly pasta salad (farfalle) which was cooked farfalled shredded carrots and a little red pepper in italian dressing.

She added bugs on a log and bugs on a rock.  Celery logs and apple rocks spread with peanut butter and topped with raisin and craisin bugs.

She added picnic food of fried chicken, fresh biscuits, fruit salad on a red gingham table cloth decorated with plastic ants.

The little ones got to make butterfly wings from taped off wire (dry cleaner hangers draped with tulle.   Mom and Auntie premade the wings by shaping and cutting the hangers then wrapping two hangers togethers and wrapping all the wires with masking tape. (LOTS of masking tape).   We then draped and glued tulle around the shaped wires. The little ones got to glue pom poms onto their wings for the butterfly's spots.   The favors were deely boppers so we have five four-year old butterflies.

  • I am thinking about having this theme for my daughter's 2nd birthday as well. I was thinking of incorporating the foods from the book. For example having deli subs with the salami and cheeses from the book, fruit salad, cake, ice cream etc.

I also saw (can't remember the site) where they made "caterpillars" out of grapes and a strawberry. The strawberry was the head and the green grapes were the body pieces. They were on kabab sticks.

Wittle Things invitation website has very cute Hungry Caterpillar invites!

Since its for a girl I am going to incorporate a lot of the purples and hot pinks, along with the rest of the colors.

    Have fun planning!

  • You can get a bunch of green helium balloons and weight them, with each string cut to a different length.  (Or if they are air blown up balloons, tape them to the wall in a line at different heights.)  When placed in a line, they look like a caterpillar.  Draw a face on the first balloon.  :)
  • How Fun!!!

Will there be a reading of the story?

Will there be older children there? It would be easy to do a cut paper craft with them so they could make their own hungry caterpillar.

There are some great products out there, including some teaching materials that could be great for decorating in a park. You could mount some of the buliten board cut outs on sticks and put them in buckets on the tables with some balloons or even around the perimeter of your picnic area. (I know sticks and one year olds are not a great idea, but I'm sure you can get creative...)

I found this link on Eric Carle's Website. http://www.eric-carle.com/bb-VHC.html

    Have fun!
