So I have 2 kids of my own and keep 3 other kids. One of the children (17months) is new. I had a spot open and another Mom jumped on it quickly.
My ? is this. Last Monday she started here with a runny nose. Mom said she had a low grade fever Sunday. She said it was her teeth (One of my rules. fever free 24 hours told her this and she said just her teeth). The childs nose ran ALL DAY i mean ALL DAY to the point her nose was terribly red and it was starting to hurt to use tissues. Nose got worse and worse and worse.l the Mom did NOT provide me with a bulb to clean out the childs nose and I had to use my own (ick) all day wed and Thurs. I gave her the bulb said she could keep it. ANYWAY. I didnt have her Fri to Monday. I asked how she was doing Tues. She said better. She now has a cough and her nose is STILL running. Sneezing is well OMG gross. I asked her on TUES what the Dr. said. She said she didnt take her and it was too expensive for them to tell her to do the same ol thing. it has now been 11 days.
? to you I am thinking of telling the MOM to keep her home on Monday if it is not better. ALL of the other kid (mine included) have gotten this from her (me included and I am 6 wks pregnant) I took my kids to the dr. and the other parents children are treating the symptoms and kids are older and have not gotten it as bad.
I know the risks that come with watching kids and NO I would not tell a parent to keep the kid home for a runny nose every 2 seconds..but it is 11 days and I cant keep on having myself and the other kids sick.
Ok ladies so what would you do or think if you walked in and saw a kids like this in your daycare or in home on day 11?
Re: SHM also keep 3 other kids..looking for other MOMs opinon..
What does "jsut her teeth" mean? A fever is a fever and I think you need to stand more firm on that! Sounds like this mother will always have an excuse. If the doctor is "too expensive", I wonder if they have insurance, and from that... I wonder what their job/ financial situation is. I have to wonder if she feels she can't take off to stay home, so in turn, she's going to push and excuse her kids sicknesses.
My ultimate take- have very clear, written out policies. A fever is a fever - say "no" next time. And perhaps even state that you may require a doctors note in certain situations before re-admitting a child.
And this is a situation (11 days?!) where I feel you can say you need a doctors note.

Sounds like allergies. Some kids have runny nose constantly.
If she has a fever that is a different story. I would stick to your policy. You probably should have not taken her that first day she wasn't fever free for 24 hours.
So true!!! Need to stand my ground. I try my best to NOT make the parents feel like I am telling them what to do or how to be a parent and jsut need to FOREGET it and do what I know is right for the other kids and I.
If you've all been exposed and suffered symptoms, then it's too late to isolate her. You won't get sick again from the same bug, if you think this is day 11 of the same thing.
Did you take the baby's temp? A fever is a sign of infection, has the potential to be very serious, requires isolation and has treatment options. A runny nose just doesn't rise to the same level. I'd be worried that it would lead to an ear infection, but I wouldn't prohibit the child until it did. Seems like the doctors that the other children saw said that is was just a cold?
If the baby is just prone to be runny and sick then you can kick her out of your care. But it sounds more like a personal preference than a standard.
I have taken her temp and as of today its gone from 98.7 to 99.2. If it is allergies it also is something that needs to be tended to. A child can NOT be comfortable with a cold or allergies. And a constant runny nose with wipe here wipe there cant feel good either.
Acutally my Dr. gave me something for my children bc of the symptoms of the cough that was creating.
Totally random, but as someone who works in local government in your area, I hope you have a permit to have an in-home daycare business. I side eye that you can't spell Raleigh correctly.
doglove...First off..if I am a stay at home Mom..do you think I am still working..side eye that first...
Im sorry my Raleigh is not spelled right you are the only one that had enough time to see that in 4 years..good SIDE EYE..
and maybe you should look at the law about day care centers..amount of children etc... before asking such questions..but thanks for such concern.
I never questioned whether or not being a SAHM was working. I do, in fact, believe that it is work and hard work at that. Since you are operating a daycare business out of your house, I simply stated I hope you have a special use permit (if you require one) to do so as I have seen a number of people get burned for this.
Sorry for the flame, I just thought it's weird to spell your own city wrong.
My LO has had a runny nose for weeks. Her cold has developed into a nasty sounding cough.
I took her to the Dr to check for a chest infection etc. She is fine. He did give me antibiotics if she spikes a temperature because he said it seems like it's tracking the pattern of a virus becoming bacterial. She has never spiked a fever.
Over the last few weeks she's had what i would consider two colds. Where she was clearly unwell and unhappy. Her temp was slightly elevated at those times but not a fever as such. I sent her to my Mums rather than daycare when she was "unwell" so that she would get better rest and less stimulation.
But her nose has run the whole time and her cough sounds horrible.
She's been back at daycare because she is essentially well. Daycare is happy to have her as long as she doesn't have a fever.
So I guess my point is, a nose can run for weeks, and a child be essentially well.
I understand that you don't want the other kids and yourself getting sick, but really whatever illness the child has has already been spread.
You could change your policy ie no cold symptoms at all
99.2 is not considered a fever by a doctor in a child that age, so I wouldn't consider it a temperature that would preclude going to daycare.
Little kids get runny noses that last forever. There is literally nothing that can be done to cure it, so why would you go to the doctor for that?
No cold symptoms at all as a policy for a daycare would be prohibitive. My son wouldn't be able to attend his preschool for about 3/4 of the year if that were the case!
And someone said they'd worry about the runny nose causing an ear infection-ear infections are not contagious, so that isn't something to worry about the other kids getting.
