Does the real world not read TCYOF?
So, I don't lurk on The Bump at all, but thanks to some Nesties here (*cough - KB - cough*), I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and then What to Expect Before You're Expecting.
Ever since reading those, I've noticed a lot of pop culture references that are "wrong" -- and they're wrong about things that the books point out that most people mess up, but now they're just more obvious to me.
For example -- when Jesse Eisenberg hosted SNL and said he knew a lot about women and then made some joke about "Well, I know that every 28 days..." I was screaming at my TV "NOT EVERYONE! It's anywhere from 24-40 days, you idiot!"
Tuesday night on Parenthood (mild Spoiler alert, but not really, because it's an old plot line), two of the characters are trying to have a baby. The male reeeeaaaalllly wants to have sex, but his wife says "No! I'm not ovulating for two days! We have to wait!" and I'm thinking "Um. Sperm can live in the body for five to six days. In fact, old wives tales think that you're more likely to have a girl if you have sex 'early' because those sperm last longer. You can totally do it now and be fine."
It's kinda hilarious to me, since I didn't know either of the above things that I am now yelling at my TV about until I read both books...but seriously, TV. Get with the program. (hah. See what I did there?)

The real world doesn't know half of the useless, er, I mean useful, stuff knotties/nesties/bumpies know.
But in defense of the 28 days thing, although it can and does vary, 28 is the generally accepted view of average to the point it's what doctors and pharmaceutical companies decided should be the norm when controlled by medication.
And God help me if DH ever hears that old wives tale! He's determined we have a boy first and has even said he's going to research tips to make it happen.

1) I know it's the average. I just think it's funny when people think it's "the law." Especially since a friend of mine (who charted and everything) got in an argument with her OB/GYN about her conception date. She knew she had 38 day cycles. Her doc kept asking "When was your last period?" and she said "It's irrelevant." The doc finally said "Well, the ultrasound will show us. And you'll see I'm right." Doc was totally wrong. She was right.
2) Don't you guys watch HIMYM? He should be putting his junk on ice, just like Marshall did
We do! And I'm pretty sure he's going to be referencing that episode and making sure I'm not eating pineapple core!

I haven't read either book, but did know this stuff. The SNL reference didn't make me as upset as the Parenthood one. I was yelling at the TV too, saying Julia, stop it and have sex with your husband already! Poor guy.
This bugged me too! I was like COME ON, of all the characters, Julia *would* know this - I feel like it was a total oversight by the writers.
