Need resource to help me decide what to plant

Hi all.  I'm new to this board, and I'm trying to decide what type of flowers to plant in my (tiny) front yard.  Are there any online resources that will help me narrow down which flowers will do best in a particular area?  Something that will let me search by zone, amount of sun, plant size, blooming times, etc.?  I have a few flower gardening books, but it's hard to compare and contrast flowers in a book.  TIA!

Re: Need resource to help me decide what to plant

  • Check out your state government and state university websites.  If either has an agricultural department, they can be good resources for types of plants that grow well in your area.   The searchable sites generally want to sell something so it won't be terribly easy.  Learning what grows well in your area will help to sustain the environment and make it easier for you.
  • Ditto.  My local master gardners extension through my state university has been very helpful.  I've even been able to talk to real people from the extension about my yard.
  • I don't know if you have a book like this already, but get a copy of a regional/area gardening guide. I have a TN/KY Gardener's Guide that lists plants that do well in my area. It includes maturity height information as well.

As far as websites go, I like Dave's Garden. The site has a lot of information on various plants including user comments on how the plant fared in their area.
