What sounds like a better deal?

I've been online SUV shopping.  I haven't actually been to a dealership yet, just comparing online right now.  I'm kind of hoping to take advantage of the President's day sales, but if not, no big deal, I can wait.

I really need a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle, especially with the winter we had up here this year.  I want to get an SUV, but the gas guzzling kills me.  After a little research, I think an Chevy Equinox might be my best bet.  It appears to be the most fuel efficient cross-over & also has an ECO button to be even more fuel efficient.

So, here's what I found so far:

Option 1: 2010, 30K mi., for $19K

Option 2: 2007, 50K mi, for $13K (does not have ECO button & slightly different body style)

Option 3: 2011, 0K mi, for $24K

I'm expecting to get about $5K for my trade.  The costs of options 1-3 are without factoring in my trade.

  • I would go with option 1 or 3.  If you can swing it, option 3.  Idk why but I would rather buy new if I can.

  • Option 1 or 3...but why does option 1 have so many miles? I looked at the Equinox but ended up loving the Traverse! I'm just car "browsing" right now but found a brand new fully loaded Traverse for around 30K, so I bet you could get the dealership to come down on the price of the 2011 Equinox from 24K!
  • If it were me, I would go for option 1.  $5k is a big chunk of money for 1 years difference.  But if I had the money I would stay away from option 2.  I like to keep my cars for a long time and having a car that is already 4 years old is relatively old for car standards.  My car is a 2007 and I am ready to get rid of it.  Won't happen, but I already ready for a newer car.

    GL!

I was wondering the same thing about Option 1.  Isn't the Traverse a lot bigger than the Equinox?  I'm looking for a small SUV/crossover.  Not ready for a big hunka beast.

The thing I like about Option 2, is obviously the price.  I keep my cars for a pretty long time too, because I'm still paying for them.  But if I went with #2, I'd have that paid off in no time.  I could then drive payment free for a while or be able to trade it in sooner.

With Option 3- I won't pay more than $20K for it.  So unless they're willing to come down on their price, there's no deal.

  • I would check the Blue Book value to make sure, but I would probably lean toward #2.  Buying a new car just isn't economical as cars lose the most value right after you drive them off the lot.  Option 1 has pretty high mileage for its age.  Option 2 still has relatively low mileage, and or the price, you'd be able to pay it off a lot faster.  Not having a car payment is so liberating.
  • I would go with #1 or 3.  If you're going to keep the car for awhile, I'd definitely go new.  It doesn't pay to buy new if you are only going to keep the car a couple years, but if you know you'll pay it off and still be driving it - it's a great option.  Option 2 has way too many miles IMO - you're likely to start having problems with it and it won't be covered under the warranty.

I had an Equinox as a company car a few years back and for the most part I really liked it!

What didn't you like about it?  What year was it?  How are the blind spots?

I had a 2006.  I never had an issue with blind spots.  There wasn't anything that I truly didn't like about it as far as the operation, etc.  It was a company car, and I was used to driving a Nissan before that.  It was just the difference between a Nissan and a Chevy that I didn't love. :)

The Traverse is bigger than the Equinox because it has a third row, but it folds down for trunk space so it isn't that much bigger, not like the Tahoe or anything. I did test drive the Equinox and I loved it. And it had blind spot mirrors on the side mirrors. Maybe not on the 2007, though.
