Does anyone have a flower cutting garden?

A couple of years ago, I did go to a nursery to get a flower bed design done for my front beds. I did one bed according to the design but never got around to the second one. It took me some time to figure out why that was, but it finally dawned on me that I would like to devote that bed to being a cutting garden. It's an odd shape - it's triangular - and I don't want to cover up the window with plants. My daughter gets a kick out of opening that window and looking at the flowers.

So, my question is, do any of you have a cutting garden? Is it formal, or do you just plant whatever you want? And are there any design guidelines that I need to follow?

I don't know if I'm going to have another plan done or not. I'm toying with the idea, but I don't think I'll have the time to really do it with the baby due soon.

Re: Does anyone have a flower cutting garden?

  • I have a small corner of my yard that I'm thinking of turning into a butterfly garden. I have 2 butterfly bushes but i'm thinking of adding some 'wild' flowers that i could use for cutting.

So, my question is, do any of you have a cutting garden? I've designed them.

Is it formal, or do you just plant whatever you want? Most are not formal (cutting or not).

And are there any design guidelines that I need to follow? Absolutely, but there isn't enough time or space to talk about design theory here - it took years of school. I follow design principles in all designs. You should google 'theory of landscape design' or 'principles of design' or 'gestalt theory' to get a general overview.

I don't think I'll have the time to really do it with the baby due soon. Agreed. Good luck.

  • I do. I cut things from all over my garden but do have about a 4x8 space where I grow cutting plants. I keep mine really easy....buy a few packets of plants and go to town. Esp. with baby coming, have your daughter do most of the work. For a triangular space, I would choose something taller for the back and something lower growing for the fronts. Some of my really successful cutting flowers have been zinnias (look for a tall variety--mine got to be about 2-3 ft tall) and some shorter variety sunflowers. Very easy for a few packets of seeds for a few bucks apiece. Cosmos is another I am going to plant more seeds of this year. Very pretty!

One other advantage of this is it's very low commitment....if you don't like it, you can choose something else the next year.

  • Thanks everyone!

NB - I'm going to dig out a few of my design-related gardening books to gain a better understanding of the design principles. My fear is that it'll look like a huge jungle, if I don't adhere to some principles.

Renee - My daughter LOVED the zinnias. She was so sad when it was time to cut them down last year. I did buy a few seed packets of taller varieties.

Did you have any issues with your Cosmos? I grew them last year, and they seemed to have a tendancy to try and strangle the neighboring plants. I have no clue what that was about. I may plant them again this year. I'll plant the taller plants along the garage wall. I have a trellis in the middle of the wall with confederate jasmine.
