It's National Drink Wine Day!

I cannot wait to have a glass in a few hours.  In honor of the day, what is your favorite type of wine?  [Poll]

Re: It's National Drink Wine Day!

  • At home, we normally just drink cheap house white wine.  But my favorite wine is riesling!

  • After the week I just had.... I think I need this holiday! Can I say I like wine period?  Depending on what we're eating is how I pick.  Overall, though, I prefer whites and love Riesling as well!  So tasty :)

  • I feel like I've "grown" in my wine tastes.  From college where I usally drank swill like Boone's Farm or Riuniti Royal Raspberry (in a squeez bottle at frat parties no less).  To young adult where I preferred White Zinfandel.  Then I graduated to white - Pinot Grigio or Riesling.  I still like white, but I now really like red - Pinot Noir and Shiraz especially.  I used to not be able to do really dry wines like Chardonnay, Cabernet or Merlot, and I've even gotten used to those.  Hmmm - you would think I drank wine all the time.  Funny thing is, I drink it so rarely that I usually don't bother to open a bottle at home since it will go bad before I drink it (DH doesn't drink).

  • Really?  I never knew there was a national day for drinking wine.

I love wine, I drink it as often as possible. Depending on the occasion, if I am eating, or if I am drinking anything else will help me decide what kind.

I recently started bottling my own, at a local store.  It works out to $4.00 per bottle, can't beat that!  The only down side to this; I drink it too fast because it is too readily available.

Cheers ladies, any suggestions for a wine to try tonight?

  • I only drink Moscatto.  DH prefers the one that Olive Garden has, which we found exactly one liquor store in a nearby town that sells. It's a lot cheaper from the store though!  Unfortunately we don't have any wine left so I'll probably use the fact that it's the national day for wine to stop at Binny's after dinner (Binny's is in the same strip mall as where we're eating tonight)

  • I think because of the holiday I'll have a glass....I have chronic migraines, and unfortunately, alcohol (especially wine) tends to be a trigger. Which sucks, because I'm a HUGE wino. My headaches have gotten more frequent and severe the last several months, so it's been easy a few months since I've had a glass. I haven't had a glass in so long, I feel like I deserve one. Hopefully, a little won't hurt!

  • I was afraid to drink because I might have started to prime things other than walls!  I do like wine- I like Reisling and there is a kind of red from a particular winery that we like, but I am have no idea what it is (it's something in French; I only know what the bottle looks like).

Sterl, do you get migrains with white wine, too?  I read somewhere that it is the tanins in the red that can trigger migraines.

I do have one good wine story. I was at a biology conference and at this one they would offer wine and beer during the poster session. This was a few years ago, and I normally didn't drink wine. Well,  I had two glasses on a pretty much empty stomach and was feeling quite good.   I looked about five feet away from the group I was talking to, and there he was.  Ian Wilmut.  The Dolly the Sheep guy.   I really wanted to go over there and say "oh my gosh, I am so excited to meet you! people actually know who you are!"  Probably not the most professional thing I could have thought to say.  I realized I had enough- and went back up to my room for a little bit :)   Looking back, I wish I would have actually said it! And wow- that whole paragraph makes me sound like a HUGE geek!  But we (esp. as grad students) get excited to meet people who wrote the papers we read day in day out- and usually it's not someone who is internationally famous!

  • I don't usually do a lot of white - I love moscato, but other than that I prefer blush wines. (I was never a big fan in the past of dryer wines.) But I had a glass of pinot grigio (It was in the fridge - I used some in a recipe an it was left over.) and I'm actually feeling okay this morning. :)

Maybe you know the secret. :)

  • I didn't get to read this till Sat morning, but my favorite is Pinot Noir.  I used to not like red wine and would drink Riesling, but barely ever finished a glass.  There is also a winery about an hour from here that makes a great rasberry wine that I love.  I had wine last night at dinner (on national drink wine day) because my friends and I went out for my bday which is today!!
  • My birthday was on that fabulous national holiday. I celebrated with a few glasses of white wine, but do like a variety of different wines. My FIL is a conniseur and has 2 wine cellars in his basement. We're pretty spoiled when it comes to wine!
