Visiting Indianapolis

Hi everyone!

I am from Arizona, but have some relatives in Indianapolis, so I'm trying to convince my husband to go to Indiana. He doesn't want to go because it's a really expensive trip to just visit relatives between airfare, a hotel, and a rental car, so I want to find other exciting things to do there as well.

Can anyone tell me what Indiana has to offer? What are the main tourist things to do there, and is there anything that is really different, or something that we have to see?

 Thanks for your help!

Re: Visiting Indianapolis

  • You can always visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and take a tour of the museum and even ride around the track (in a tour bus).  Downtown Indianapolis has improved A LOT in the past couple of decades.  Many improvements have been recently in preparation for Super Bowl 2012.  The Indianapolis Museum of Art is interesting, too.
  • it depends on the time of year. We have carriage rides around down town but in the winter its way to cold. We also have the IMA, its a beautiful art museum but its the best when flowers are blooming because they have a ton of flowers that make everything just look so alive. There are a ton of great restaurants downtown that are unique depending on your financial situation and what type of food you like.
  • Do you like ethnic food?  There are lots of great places around town.  A new Indonesian restaurant is opening in Broad Ripple called Garuda.
  • Depends what you like and when you are coming. Indiana is my favorite in the summer. Brown County state park is beautiful for camping and has many shops, local foods etc. (plus camping is cheaper than hotels). Concerts are big especially at Verizon Wireless Music Center (used to be Deercreek). Easley Winery is very cool, it's downtown. We have several museums. The symphony (especially in the summer, symphony on the prarie at Conner Prarie). Pacers, Colts, Indians, Ice, Speedway, plenty of sports. I would not visit until at least May, the weater is too depressing before hand.
