Edit: where to find spice rack, nut cracker and scratchy towels?

Seriously. I can't find any of these things.

I need a spice rack that you hang on the wall. Wooden, maybe. Maybe not. Something sizable. None at Bed Bath & Beyond, Cost Plus or Target. I can barely find any online. I'm about ready to commission someone to make one.

And I couldn't find a good old-fashioned nut cracker at any of those places either.

And towels. I've bought several different brands of towels from Target. They're all soft, but none of them are as absorbent as my old, scratchy towels. They don't have to be scratchy, just absorb the water.

Suggestions?

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I got a metal one at cost plus

  • We bought our towels at Costco. They're super absorbent and soft :)

  • I would commission someone to do it. Or design one yourself. One reason is, I always need more space than a traditional one allows, and sometimes I want bigger spaces because we go through a lot of spice. I also grow a lot of my own, so having a space that I could hang it upside down to dry it would be helpful too. ETSY you could probably find one for cheap...

Also check free cycle and craigslist and local garage sales.

  • maybe the container store for the spice rack?

I think we got our towels at Target or BBB - they are the microfiber kind so they absorb water pretty well.

  • Try Home Goods.

  • I got our nut cracker from the grocery store during the holidays, it's just a plain old regular metal one.

I am help with the spice rack as I have a counter top one.

As for the towels, I've heard that if your using liquid fabric softener they won't absorb as much water.  We just use dryer sheets and all our towels absorb great!

  • I've noticed the really soft, bathroom style towels don't absorb well either. I don't use liquid fabric softener either. The ones I use most were made by my great aunt though. My nutcracker was passed down to me.
  • They are a little pricey but the Vera Wang Collection towels from Kohls are awesome. They absorb well and are soft. I like the weight they have too, they are thick and not super thin which I like.

  • Macy's? Crate and Barrel?
  • For the towels, I have different kinds and I'm a little embarressed to admit but my favorite thick ones (I like thinner ones for my hair) are from Walmart.  They are absorbant, and have a reasonable texture (not the micro-plush softness, but pretty soft), and have held up well over say 3-4 years I've had them.

Backstory: We were staying at a friends condo "weekend place" near SLO and while there were sheets, we couldn't find any towels at all. So we bought some at Walmart, bath and beach types, and then took them home.

  • Agree with Greekwife, nutcrackers (and flour sifters) can generally be found in a grocery store with their sparse assortment of kitchen stuff. Safeway has had them in the past along with Lucky.

I get a lot of our towels at Ross or Tuesday Morning. Also, when Macys has a good sale. :-)

  • I bought some of "The Big One's" towels at Kohls on sale. But I also second Homegoods or TJMaxx for towels as well.

  • I found a nutcracker! And purchased locally too. Thank you, Fresno Ag. Now for towels and a spice rack.

  • Maybe try Ikea, Amazon, eBay, or even Etsy for a spice rack?

For a nutcracker, are you talking about the metal kind where you crack the nutshell by putting it towards the top and squeezing the handles like pliers? I would also try Amazon if that's what you're looking for.

As for towels, I am on the market as well since mine seemed to have disappeared.
