Looking for the nurses' opinions

Hey ladies!  I know there's a decent number of nurses around here, so I'm hoping for some opinions.  Tell me all about your jobs, please.  Pros, cons, money (if you don't mind talking about it), hours, etc.

I've been looking for a decent lawyer job for close to 2 years now, and I'm just not convinced it's the right field for me.  The breaking point has been the past 2 interviews I've been on where I was asked if I have children or plan to (hello, can we say illegal??), and then lost out on the positions to men.  The law doesn't seem like a great fit, and a lifestyle/career that is anti-baby is not going to work out, so I'm exploring other options.

I'm attending an orientation on Monday for my law school's nursing program (ABSN), but I would love to hear some real life opinions as well.  Thanks!

Re: Looking for the nurses' opinions

  • I'm not a nurse...but I'm totally curious...What were your responses to the children questions?

I have no idea what I'd say to an interviewer!!

  • As a law office manager, you have options.

    1.  Law firms who are smaller, more family-oriented are going to be more forgiving re: family+career lifestyles.  I know the job market is crap right now, but I can get you in touch with firms that I know are actively hiring, if you're still interested in looking.

    2.  I know that for our personal injury clients/cases, we hire nurses who work for other law firms to review our volumes of medical records and provide opinions that we use for trial/settlement.  This might be something that would be more interesting, but also give you a pay boost if you are educated in both - firms would be getting a 2 for 1 deal.  I could put you in touch with someone to get her perspective if are interested in such a career.

    3.  Or you could scrap the whole legal thing and just be a nurse, if you think that would make you happy.  :)

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the replies.  I just tell them that I don't have kids (because I don't) and that I'm focusing on building my career right now.  I've had friends tell me to just lie and say I don't want kids, but I'm not a liar and don't care to work for someone who is going to be a pain once I do start a family.

Thanks for the offer, Nicole, but we moved back to Chicago.  Any chance you know anyone up here??  :)

  • Maybe.  I'll post a new topic tomorrow and see if any of our local offices have Chicago offices that are hiring.  You never know where opportunites lie...

  • I'm sure the nurses on this board will chime in. I'm not a nurse, but I'm curious if you have your heart set on nursing or would be open to other fields. Demand-wise, there's a high need for therapists right now. I would suggest PT or OT assistant as it only takes 2 years to get an associate degree, as compared to 5 years. Therapists can choose to work in different settings: home health, hospitals, out-patient clinics, nursing homes, or school system. Home health offers the highest pay and most flexible schedule. I'm guessing in Tampa Bay PT/OT assistants make 50-65K/year.

  • Hello! Sorry I'm chiming in a bit late here, but its been kinda hectic. :)

I can tell you that being a nurse doesn't sound much better than being a lawyer. Yes, there are cons to every job, but nursing is an extremely flawed system. I speak of hospital nursing since that is the only thing I have experince with. We are overworked and underpaid. We are responsible not only for our job duties, but those of every other health care professional. If something doesnt get done, the nurses are to blame. We are the care coordinators, and when someone else doesn't do their job, we are the ones who have to pick up the slack. It's exhausting. We are treated as licenses. They don't care about you or your outside life or even how they treat you. You are a license, there to fill a position.

Every once in a while you will get an awesome patient/family member, but those are too few and far between.

The perks: 3 day work weeks! Decent pay (though not enough for what we do), and I think I get a decent amount of vacation time. At my hospital it hardly costs me anything to get a procedure done, etc.

Yes, I am a little burned out now. However, I graduated from nursing school almost 6 years ago and many of my classmates are already gone from the bedside, have become ARNP's, or have left nursing all together. I know I'm not alone!

I have a lot more to say about this subject, but the Z monster is stirring and is probably hungry. :) In a few weeks, you can PM me or send me a message on FB if you want more opinions. :)
