Hi, I am sort of new here so I guess I will introduce myself. My name is Rachael I am 19 and have been married for about five months. I live in a tiny apartment but I love gardening; so I though I would try growing container plants on my balcony....
Now to the question... What flowers are the best for containers? I want lots of color! Also, are there any veggies that do well in containers?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Re: Intro and Question
As long as your balcony gets a lot of sun, you can do certain veggies in containers (as long as the containers are a decent size). My grandma has an apartment w/balcony and her container of bell peppers did better than the ones I had in my garden! She also had a patio tomato plant (smaller type of tomato plant suited for containers) and it did well. If the container is deep enough, you could do carrots. An assortment of herbs would be nice, too.
As for flowers, geraniums are great. I live in the North and my geraniums always last through fall through the first frost. I've even brought them in over the winter once before and they survived and then thrived the next year! Petunias are great, esp. the trailing ones- they look really pretty spilling over the container. Marigolds can be really colorful, and help deter some garden bugs from certain veggies. Mums are great for the fall. Coleus are nice (depending on the variety's size; some are for sun and some are for shade). Vinca vines combined with other plants make a nice looking planter.
If you happen to have a lot of shade, impatiens work well for containers. You have lots of options! Typing out my answers to you now has me excited for spring!
Thanks! My balcony does have a lot of sun so I should be good to go....
I am so ready for spring! We have had some unusually warm weather here lately, I live in Southeast MO and it has been a solid 65 for the last two weeks! I'm driving my H crazy with my gardening plans! haha
Thank again.
I did a container garden last year because it was my first summer in our house and I wasn't sure where the sun would hit.
Things that grew well: Tomato, Basil, Mint, Chives, Jalapeno pepper, strawberry
Things that did not grow well: cucumber, bell pepper, rosemary, oregano
I think the trick with the herbs is to pick them often. I found myself making a lot of pesto and mojitos, so I think that's why the mint and basil thrived while the other herbs didn't.
