Update on house

After much talking on Friday evening we decided to stay in our townhouse for about another 2 years. We looked at every single house online that was in our price range and some that were out and we could not find anything that we liked. We felt like we were being rushed into finding a house and our next house will be one that we will be in for a while, so we didn't want to rush into it. I didn't want to go over a certain price and one that I really liked was way out of our price range.

What we were going to do when we sold ours was pay off both of our cars, use some of it for closing costs and then put the rest for a down payment. After seeing how much our downpayment was and how much our mortgage would be, I just was not comfortable paying that each month. It was doable, but I just didn't feel comfortable.

It will take some rearranging and organization, but we can make it work for a couple more years. The avenge of staying here is that 1) in 2 years (or less) our cars, will be paid off 2) our house will be paid down more 3) hopefully the economy will get better and we can sell our house for more 4) by having everything paid off we can have a bigger downpayment therefore not have to finance so much.

We talked about it and hopefully and knock on wood that in a couple of years our only debt will be our house and we might be able to swing it where I can stay at home or at least work part-time either at my current job or find another job.

I'm a little disappointment, but I already have thought about what we need to buy to make this work. I will have to move my craft stuff into a corner of the kitchen and I can make that work, we will store some things at G's father house, move a piece of furniture in the living room. It might be a little cramped for a while, but I keep thinking people who have less space then us have made it work, so we can make th is work.

I agree with G I didn't want to rush into a house just because we had to find a house. We thought about moving into an apartment until we find a house, but with a LO on the way that was just not practical and we didn't want to have to be moving 7 months along or with a newborn. If in 2 years our house sells and we move into an apartment for 6 months that will be different.

Right now I am closer to my doctor, hospital and my mom to help me, so it makes a little more sense to stay.

Just wanted to update you guys.

Re: Update on house

  • that all sounds like a good plan.  It's so hard to get emotionally tied to an idea of moving to a house when in all reality you need to do something different.  I think you've made a good choice :)

  • Sounds to me like you have made a very smart decision!! In our 'make-room-for-baby-in-our-tiny-house' scheme we are getting rid of quite a bit of furniture and my craft supplies are getting very scarce but I'm very excited to have a less cluttered home! I think this was definitely the push I needed to purge a LOT!

  • Sounds like you've made a good decision!  I'm also really hoping that the housing market picks up in a couple years...we don't want to be stuck living in Seattle forever!

Just curious...what happened with the offer that you guys had this last week?  Were you able to just walk away from it?

we told them we were not selling. Because we only had a counteroffer in and no contrat we were able to just reject the offer. Probably if we had already signed a contract it may have not been easy to walk away.

  • thanks for the update!! i wish you guys all the best! i'm sure you'll be able to find and make the room you need.
  • Sounds like a great plan Heather!  Ya know, I'm always amazed when I watch some of the decorating shows on HGTV, what the decorators can do with organizing and making room in a smaller home.  There are definitely options out there to help with storage, etc.  Good luck!

  • That sounds like a good idea! I agree with many other girls you can do alot now with storage to help control the junk we all have.

  • Sounds like a good decision. It's amazing what you can do with what you have, if you put some thought into it!
