Vaseline alternative?

I have horrendous allergies, and (sorry if TMI) I get nosebleeds quite frequently as a result.  My allergist has recommended that I use a q-tip to put Vaseline in my nose, and doing so has actually helped a lot.  But is there a green/safer alternative?

I've done some google searches and some salves are recommended as general Vaseline alternatives, but I don't think the consistency of these salves will work for this specific purpose, and I'd really like something as unscented as possible so the smell doesn't drive me crazy.  Do you have any recommendations that have a consistency like Vaseline?

Thanks so much!

Re: Vaseline alternative?

  • My first thought is coconut oil. You can buy it unscented (refined.) It is thinner than vaseline, but that is the only thing that came to mind.

  • Opening up an "un- Petroleum" page as I type this-

I love Burts Bees Res-Q Salve.  It smeels some but I use it on elbows, fingers, occasional hand (emergency) lotion and on my lips.  It goes up my nose when I'm super dried out and it smells some but fades (really, IMO) quickly.  Also love the small size- it fits in my bag so easily I can always have it close.

Alba has some great stuff- I'll keep my eye out for that.  DH loves lubriderm (sp?) and that'd be a great replacement.

  • I've been using castor oil on a q-tip. Castor oil contains a lot of fatty acids and is a humectant, so it does a great job moisturizing.  I also put a thin coat of castor oil on my hands at night and they're not nearly as dried out as they were at the beginning of winter!
  • Thanks everyone.

And I'm glad to see that I'm not a complete weirdo for having to moisturize inside my nose :)

No can do sister.  My mom used to make me take this as a kid when I was sick and it is now banned from my house, lol.  However, I really wanted to comment on your siggy pic.  Love how flowy your dress was.
