Some really icky local news

So about an hour and a half ago, I left my apartment to return a movie & see if there was anything else I wanted to rent. There wasn't, so I was only gone for about 20 minutes. On my way home, I noticed that on the main road right before you turn into our apartment, there was a police car pulled to the side of the road with it's blue lights flashing & two other cars pulled to the side in front of it. I just figured someone had a fender bender & didn't give it much thought.

I pulled into our parking lot & saw one of the cute old ladies who lives across the hall from me outside talking to a man. The man saw me pull up & came over & asked me if I know anyone in our apartment that has a little girl between one and two years old. It turns out in the short time I was out, this man & his wife drove down the road by our apartment & saw a toddler walking all alone on the sidewalk about two feet from the main road. I was shocked! Unfortunately the only people I know in our apartment complex are the people in my building (six apartments, one of which is empty & one where the man works in Nashville & is only here about three days a week).

Anyway, I felt bad that I was absolutely no help. While my neighbor & I were outside talking to the man, the police officer drove up with the little girl in the backseat. She was so small in her little turquoise t-shirt & it just broke my heart. The policeman opened the door & she got out & stood next to the woman who had found her. She had a baby bottle of juice that they said she was carrying when they first found her. She just stood & held the lady's hand & looked around while the policeman asked us questions & then went inside to knock on people's doors.

I didn't have any information that could help anyone & didn't want to stand outside & be in the way just out of my own curiosity, so I came inside after a few minutes. I was just so sad. How could something like that happen? Who could lose a toddler by a major road, or worse, what if someone knowingly left her out there? There's big traffic out there. I see eighteen wheelers out there all the time! I'm just so disturbed, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I really want to know what happened, but I feel like it's one of those things that we might just never hear the whole story about, you know? Either way, I'll be watching the news for sure. I'm so sad that someone could let this happen though. :(
