Hi! A location question!

I'm looking at Med schools, and the MD-PhD program I'd looking at KU.  I'd like to transfer to KU after I finish my AA in August to finish up my BA so I can apply because my advisor told me it's easier to get into a med school if you finished undergrad there.  Anyone know of a good area to live, that's decently priced and in a good area?  Being close to the school is a huge plus, but I don't want to live next to a bunch of college students that are going to party all the time.  Any input is greatly appreciated! ETA:  Recent research (and Nest answers) have led me to the answer that KU is actually in Lawrence... for undergrad at least.  The Medical Center is in KC... so answers for either of those places would be great!

Re: Hi! A location question!

  • Hi!  I live in Lawrence and I would say that for the most part the whole town is a nice place to live.  I would stay away from any housing that is really close to campus because that is where most of the students live.  There are some really nice apartment complexes that are on the KU bus route so it's pretty easy to get to campus without having to live within walking distance.  PM me if you have more specific questions.  Check ljworld.com and craigslist too!

  • Lawrence: I agree w/ dmlk's recommendation to stay away from living near campus - especially if you don't want to be close to party noise (plus I think parking and housing price/conditions are generally worse there). Lawrence is not a big town at all, so you can live in the outskirts and be ok, unless the reason you need to be close is because you don't have a car, etc. I used to live in a privately owned 4-plex on Wisconsin street (north of 6th St) and had a great/cheap place.  I also lived in a big apartment complex on Clinton & Wakarusa and eh, it was like any other big apartment complex.

Kansas City: The area where the med school is located (39th & State Line) is a decent hang-out area and also has a lot of available and affordable apartments. I used to live in the area and loved hanging out at the restaurants, etc. I think you'd also be ok living in most of midtown (downtown, river market, union hill, plaza, brookside). Some are cheaper than others. PM me if you have additional questions regarding any of those neighborhoods.

Good luck in your school search!
