Best place to buy an engagement ring?
Someone close to me is in the process of looking. He was disappointed in the prices the Jewelry Exchange had, but he went on Valentines weekend so maybe that's why.....anyway, I know there is a Diamond District in the city, but any recommendation as to where to go? Or other places. Also, what should be a decent price for a quality one carat diamond? I know it can vary but he is looking for something nice but knows he won't get a flawless colorless diamond. Thanks!

MH and I got our wedding rings off bluenile.com.
No complaints.
You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012
Bluenile is great! My husband got mine there. You can speak with a customer service rep so that you can be sure to get exactly what you want. I think my husband said he was on the phone for 2 hours! lol.The prices were great in comparison to some of the other places we had gone and looked at (a few months before).
As long as it is not engraved, you have 30 days to return it.
i also recommend bluenile! I lost my original wedding set when we were married for like 2 years. I ordered a new set off of bluenile. I've had it for like 3 1/2 years now, and couln't be happier! such great quality! even after wearing it everyday for 31/2 years, i still get people telling me " your ring is so shiny!" haha the other day i was getting some bloodwork done and the girl was like " wow! look at that ring!"
I was a little hesitant to buy something this expensive online, but our friend got his FIs ring from there and couldn't say enough good things. they had a 30 day return policy, so i figured why not give it a shot? it comes with a GIA certificate and an appraisal, and i think they have some guarantee that it will appraise the same at a jeweler you take it to?? can't remember, though. they will only deliver it when you're home, too- so i felt secure with that. i would definitely recommend it!
Mine are from this website: http://www.danforthdiamond.com/
I took my e-ring to an independent appraiser and he verified that the diamond was what DD said it was, and it appraised for higher than MH paid for it.
Plus their rings use conflict-free Canadian diamonds and recycled metals, which makes me feel good!
I can't believe how many bought a diamond off the internet - I don't think I would ever be comfortable with that or be happy buying something site unseen (in person)! Just my opinion, but I'm obviously a minority!
We use The Diamond Castle in Marlboro, NJ for everything! They are amazing, they stand behind their work 100%, you can always exchange things, they resize my ring up/down with the seasons without even asking for proof of purchase/receipt, I stop in when in the area just to have it cleaned and to make sure the stone is secure - they're really an amazing jewelry store! I never feel comfortable in those places, but this store is a different story! GL
I used a family friend who has been our jeweler for 20 years or so. She's out of the Philly diamond district but travels to NJ for clients. PM me if you want her info.
She's made pieces for everyone I know (mom, mom's friends, me, SIL, SIL's SIL, etc)

i got mine from Yanina & Co. in Cedar Grove. everyone in my family gets their jewelry there and i've sent almost all my friends there too. it's a family run business and they have amazing customer service, great prices, and really unique jewelry.
they also custom make jewelry if you want something specific.

Wow, I just checked out this site. Beautiful. I may have told DH I want the pink diamond ring when we hit the lottery LOL
OP: We got my rings at a Diamond Exchange (Fairfield). We used a jeweler my FIL dealt with a lot so he was great to work with/negotiate with etc.
