dryer sheets

(posted on cleaning too)  Does anyone make their own dryer sheets?  I've tried vinegar and natural fabric softener but laundry is coming out full of static.  I haven't tried the (pink tipped) dryer balls yet, but would love a re-usable idea for cutting down on the shocks.  TIA.

Re: dryer sheets

  • Static drives me crazy and it's bad right now.  I've been using Seventh Generation dryer sheets for the last few weeks and they're working pretty well.  I can get away with using half a sheet and they're compostable.  http://www.seventhgeneration.com/Dryer-Sheets

Before that, I was making dryer sheets.  I poured some liquid fabric softener into a small jar and put a couple cotton t-shirt rags (they were around 3" x 3" or so) in to soak.  I'd squeeze the excess out of a rag and throw it in the dryer.  This worked well and a bottle of fabric softener lasted a looonnng time.  I'll probably go back to it when I run out of the dryer sheets.

A few other things I've figured out:  drying on a lower heat for less time results in less static.  Air drying results in less static.  Synthetic materials seem to get more static-y so I try to dry those separately.  The dryer balls don't work for me. Tin foil wadded up didn't work for me either (I don't remember where I found that tip).   There are some clothes I just can't wear in the winter because it's impossible to get rid of the static.

  • Generally, static is a result of overdrying. Dry for less time, and hang things that are purely synthetic.

I stopped using dryer sheets or fabric softener years ago. I don't have static problems and live in a very dry climate. My new dryer has a sensor that turns it off automatically; with my old dryer I just learned to adjust the time downward. As a bonus, less dryer time = less energy wasted.

  • Interesting.  I never heard that, but it explains why I don't have problems with static.  I try and take out my clothes before my dryer automatically starts to decrease the heat when it senses the clothes are dry.
  • Thanks ladies!

Yes, we have lots of t-shirt rags and I was hoping that dousing squares would work!  I use low heat already but our dryer isn't as smart at the washer (I even use the "less dry" setting).  Can't wait to hang dry again but for now I'll keep my dryer on low heat & try the home-made sheets :)

  • Another tip to cut down on static- roll up some tin foil and throw the balls into the dryer!  I've been doing this for the past year and it definitely helps!!
  • Interesting tips ladies! I've been wondering what alternative to sheets are too. They don't seem to work and I hate just throwing them away. I air dry almost all of my clothes (prevents shrinking and wear/tear too) but for towels and my husbands clothes we use the moisture sensing part of our dryer but in the winter the static is awful.
