I'm getting a Kindle!

We are going to Syracuse this weekend while my parents are visiting and Chris told me he'll buy me a Kindle while we are there for my birthday.

I know we've discussed this before, but if you have one do you have any tips or tricks?

  • I do have a case for mine since I bring it everywhere. It doesn't have to be charged very often (except when you first get it) which is nice.

Oh and I search the free books on amazon.com weekly. You can usually find something good in there, including a lot of old classics.

  • I have a Kindle but, to be honest, we were at B&N last night and I like that libraries have books you can download and put on your Nook, but the Kindle doesn't allow that unless you "break" it in some technical way that I wouldn't be able to do, and then you void your warranty. You can share some books on Kindle, but you can share it only once and I think it's for 14 days.

That said, I do like my Kindle and it's way easier to read in the sun than the Nook Color, and cheaper, too. The case he bought me came with a crystal to put over the screen to prevent scratches, and you can't even tell it's there, so I'd recommend that if it's not too pricey. The case will help it from getting scratched, but I had a cover on my iPod and it still got all scratched in my purse. (With the iPod, I'm only looking at the screen for short periods but the Kindle's main purpose is the screen, so I'm not taking any chances!)

Free books are good. I also bought some for $5 recently ("Water for Elephants" and another one that looked good.) It still bothers me to spend more on an e-book than I would for a paperback, but that's just because I'm cheap and I guess I'll get over that eventually.

    Enjoy!

  • Buy a cover, mine has gotten kinda beat up just from sitting at the bottom of my purse (my fault though.)

I search for the free books on a regular basis too. They're constantly making upgrades and the update I got this morning has real page #'s which is awesome.

I love it b/c the books are so much cheaper!! Most expensive thing I bought was 11 and when I bought the book several years ago it was 27, so I'm not complaining.

  • Lucky! DH has one that I've borrowed and I love it (I'm hoping to get one for my bday in May).

DH downloaded a bunch of classics for free and loves how conveinient/light it is, especially for daily work commutes on the train.

The battery life is amazing like Diane said.  DH got it for Christmas and I'd say reads with it at least 5 days a week and just had to charge it for the first time, so it lasted almost 2 months.

However, I bought a book for it for book club.  The paperback at Borders was $7 and the e-book was $10. So, that kinda sucks.  I have heard you can share limited times for limited amount of time...but my personal holding point, why I don't get one right now, is that I'm really good with requesting and checking out books at the library.  I'm currently reading about 5 or 6 books a month for free, whereas that could get pricey for ereaders.

  • I love my Kindle - I was a late adopter (DH wanted to get one for me in 2008, but I was like "no, I like physical books!"). My fav things is getting a case with an easel stand on the back, so it can be propped up if you're on a plane, in a restaurant, etc.  Spreck makes one...

I also use my Kindle at the gym all the time - it's super easy to read while on the elliptical machine, and makes cardio go by so much faster!

Hannah, check out http://overdrive.com/.  It is a site that shows which libraries have free e-book checkouts.  Basically, if you have a membership to the library then you can check out e-books from them.  You do it all online, and once you check it out you have 3 weeks free rental. Once it expires it removes it from your e-reader.  As mentioned above, I don't think this is available for Kindle (unless the code is broken) but should be for all other e-readers.

  • I should add that I share an account with my mother (we read a lot of the same books) so that we can share all of our books.  Plus DH will find free books that are out there, and download them onto my Kindle for me, so I don't have to pay for a lot of the new books that are out there.

Thanks for sharing! Kindle isn't supported, but Chicago libraries do have ebooks.  I may have to research the Nook or Sony Reader.

AHh! But I just realized Ipad is (and we have one). Erin!! You just made my day! Thanks love!
