kinda silly application rejection ?

I've been helping DH look for a new jobs, and I don't get why he's not getting calls.  He was a union carpenter, then after not being employed for a year left and has been doing maintenance for a school for the past year.

There was a job advertised for a carpenter at a hospital he helped to build while he worked in the union.  I sent his resume for him and in the cover letter mentioned that he worked there and at other large commercial jobs while in the union.  He never got a call and about 2 weeks later the job was reposted.  I don't get it.  Why wouldn't he get a call for something like that?

Re: kinda silly application rejection ?

  • because he didn't send his own resume.

I give the side eye to every resume I get from someone other than the applicant.

Also avoid mentioning the union the best you can if it isn't a union shop.

  • well obviously I send it as though I was him

Why do you avoid mentioning the union?  Doesn't it sound good if you know he actually built it, who else would know better how to maintain it?

  • Because if they're looking for a non-unionized person now, they may assume he wouldn't be willing to or couldn't do the job.
  • It's (obviously) a competitive market out there.

How did his resume line up, line by line, to the job description/requirements?

This. Why isn't he sending his own resume? Even if you sent it "as him", obviously, that's very peculiar. There could be something else in his resume that turned them off.

  • Maybe he just needs to have someone look over his resume and cover letter. Someone who's not related to him.

And yes, you need to stop sending stuff for him.

Yep this, when people call / email me questions etc for their spouse who is looking for a job; its a huge red flag...
