Re: Updates, please!

  • Awesome post, haha!  You got everyone in there.

Georgia's good, the weather is getting gorgeous and we discovered the small "downtown" in Decatur last weekend and I'm looking forward to exploring that.

STILL haven't heard from B&BW.  It's getting to the point where maybe I don't even want to work there if the manager can't do her job right.  She didn't look at the applications at all until two weeks later and I had called her to follow up to my submission.  Then she didn't call after the interview when she said she was.  I called to follow up she didn't return my call.  She could at least call and say I haven't decided yet I'll get back to you.

So I guess I'm back at square one with the job hunt.

  • Good memory noron! where's your update though?! ;) lol

Nothing is ever set in stone in terms of homecoming BUT it's very close! So close that next weekend is probably going to be my big cleaning weekend. And, shopping for a homecoming outfit. AHH I'm so excited!

The other wives...are crazy. I went to an earlier flight's homecoming ceremony (H is on flight 6) to support a friend. I saw a couple wives wearing basically underwear, even though it was single digits outside, one had on a trench coat and over the knee boots -- wonder what was under that coat, and one wife didn't want to hug and kiss her DH because of PDA.  Of course, there are some normal women up here too.

  • lookit you remembering what everyone is up to! i'm way impressed!

i assume you mean my sister that was in the hospital (the other one is still KU, as far as i know. i don't ask, and nobody says a word about it and i'm not refriending her on FB, not that she has asked). she seems to be hanging in there. she just "graduated" from "day camp" (which is her lingo for the intensive outpatient therapy she has been in 5 days/week). she mentioned that she had tons running through her head and that she was trying to keep a journal every day to get her thoughts out. she's at home with my parents and working still. her medical bills have rolled in. shall we take guesses at how much it came to?! it included:

    -ambulance trip from her apt to local school to meet helicopter;
    -lifeflight trip to hospital;
    -2.5 days in neuro ICU;
    -3 days in regular hospital room;
    -medications galore, electrodes galore, etc..

i am unsure if these bills are including her 5 days at another hospital for inpatient therapy (psych ward), but i'm inclined to think that it does not. but i'm not entirely sure, i could be wrong. for the sake of this guessing game, we'll say it IS included.

    so, how much you think?

    -----

panda: glad to hear you're settling in and exploring! sorry to hear about BBW-i know what you mean about second guessing whether you want to work there anymore. just see what happens though, and start seeing what else is available in the meantime. good luck!

eskamo: that's so exciting that all of the H's are starting to return home!!!

  • CCH - I can't even guess at that bill.  Because there was a helicopter it's got to be huge.  I hope she's feeling better, though :(

Eskamo - They were showing up in lingerie?  That's gross.  I get missing your husband, but have a little dignity and maybe wait until you get HOME before taking the clothes off. Yikes!  What are you going to buy to wear?

  • CCH: Is she doing some kind of co-pay with insurance? If not, holy crap! That bill is going to be huge! A helicopter...

Panda, It wasn't literal lingerie but it might as well have been. Super short skirts/shorts with corset tops or tanks or see through shirts. It was crazy! And a little disturbing! All my friends are obsessed with homecoming and sex, it's what most our conversations center around! lol Not that I blame them. It's been 12 months for most..

I will probably wear a skirt with some tights and boots. Maybe a cute sweater. IDK, I've heard H&M has some really cute sweaters. I will get y'alls input when the time comes! Have to make sure it looks good Wink

  • she did not have insurance. her bills came to 150k. she has been denied for 40k from medicaid to help, but she is appealing it. even if she gets it, it's still a 100k bill. i just blank stared my mom when she tried to tell me that they would negotiate her bill down greatly since she didn't have insurance because she had a friend that broke her ankle (or something) while between jobs and they agreed on a 1k bill. sure, ma. they might do that. but even still, they are NOT going to agree to 1k for ALL OF THIS. 50k MAYBE. either way, she's got herself a huge payment plan.

me thinks maybe they should all feel stupid for telling her to wait until 1/1/11 when she got insurance again to go back to the therapist, instead of paying out of pocket. a few thousand in therapy costs would be a zillion dollars cheaper than the 150k hospital bill.

can you tell i have some resentment issues with this? but hey, at least it isn't MY 150k medical bill.

  • Oh, CCH, I don't know what to say. I remember my last huge surgery (10 years ago) and that bill was over $50,000 for one hospital, but I am glad I had insurance. But anyway, best wishes for your sister's quick recovery and a (better) resolve to those bills.

Eskamo: I can't fatham the excitement you are getting with the coming home of your H. I'll be jumping out of my skin already and have no concentration whatsoever. What you explained what you are thinking of wearing to the homecoming sounds fantastic.

As for my interview, it was going pretty good until I sat down with one of the lead nurses and explained the position. It's a CNA job (of what I don't want). So I had explained that I will be going for my LPN license next week and want to know if that will suffice the CNA requirement. It will, but there was some hesistance in that response, so she is going to check on it when the charge nurse comes back from vacation, which was Monday, to see what they can do for me. Sooooooo, I took the LPN exam and am now licensed in the state of WI (thank goodness it's not a public job)! I just got the results and have to call the HR person yet of the good news and hopefully they will 'waive' the CNA requirement. In the meantime, my fingers are crossed and still will put my resume out there for other openings. Things are finally going in the right direction. :)

  • OMG I LOVE this post! It's so nice to click on ONE thing and catch up on everyone! I'm super impressed on how you remember everything!

As for me, we officially canceled our big med. cruise. :(

Even though things are so much better in Egypt right now, it's still not great. A lot of cruise lines are still pulling out. Right now we couldn't get an answer from Celebrity, so we just canceled and decided we'd go next year or the year after when hopefully things are all better. What really did it was we don't want to risk going on the cruise and then get the port switched last minute. Egypt is one of the main reasons we were going on this particular cruise, so we want to wait to do this itinerary until Egypt is closer to 100%. We also had planned to do the overnight excursion in Cairo, which isn't exactly the best area to be.

We're actually not as disappointed as we thought we'd be. I think we've decided to go to Eastern Europe instead - Prague, Vienna, & Budapest. That's what H really wants. I want to go to French Polynesia, but his trip was less than half the price of mine lol. We're still searching around and are hoping to book something next week!

  • Great post idea Noron!

CCH: I don't know how, but I feel like I missed out on the initial post where you discussed your sisters (?!), but I'm glad your sister is doing better. I feel like it is completely insane how quickly medical bills can build up, hopefully they can figure something out!

Bellebride: I would have cancelled the cruise too. I wouldn't have been able to handle the "what if's" for the next 6 months, but that could also be my anxiety disorder haha

As far as the farm goes, it's 100% off the table at this point. There's still nothing being done legally, and everyone has lost the strength to help GMIL and try to convince her to put something on paper.

UJ is back from Maine, and awaiting his court date to determine how long he looses his lincense. I have a feeling that he's still going to drive though, and I wish I had the balls to call the cops on him. That's the good thing about this town, the cops have nothing better to do than practically "rape" people for having a headlight out.

DH is interviewing at a couple places, but its for insurance sales, so we're worried about the pay. hopefully one of them will have some sort of "decent" base pay so we can start looking for houses and get out of this piece!

  • @melko: i'm sure the thread is down there somewhere. my middle sister tried to commit suicide (for the 3rd, major, time) on xmas eve and 2 days later (while middle sister was still in ICU and had literally JUST woken up from being unconscious since xmas eve) informed me, while standing outside the waiting room, that she is KU. after 2 months of trying. middle sister went on to the psych ward a few days later. that's the cliffnotes, and nobody needs to hear the whole damned story again.

but yes, you guys are right. she is considering filing bankruptcy, but i don't think she actually knows anything about doing so. do you guys? she has 2 vehicles and student loans that = approx 100k in addition to the medical bills. is that bankruptcy worthy? can med bills be claimed for bankruptcy purposes? *shrug*

oh, and melko-what did i miss?! what's going on with the farm??

  • CCH:lots of hugs your way! that's some tough stuff to have to deal with.

As far as the farm goes, DH was supposed to eventually take over the family christmas tree farm, but his Uncle (UJ) is bipolar, and was always back and forth about it. DH ran the entire farm for the whole year, and UJ just came down for christmas season, and still did nothing. December 23rd, UJ fired DH, so now he's job hunting.  he would also go 4 months without paying DH.

I wouldnt be so pissed off except DH is almost 27 with an MBA with no experience because he was supposed to take over the farm. We're also living in this miserable 550 square foot appt that is barely livable because its right across the street, and the appt above UJ.

  • Bellebride: I would have cancelled too.  Better safe than sorry, and Egypt isn't going anywhere.

Melko: why do you hesitate to call the cops on him if he continues to drive w/ a revoked license?  I'd be calling them every time until... I don't know, he went to jail or miraculously shaped up?

CCH: OMG huge bill.  It's smaller than what I would have guessed though, I thought with the 'copter and the ICU it would have been at least $200K.  The only thing I know about bankruptcy is that it absolutely kills your credit rating, so it should be a last resort.  I don't know if it covers medical bills, but I don't see why it wouldn't?  Maybe she should meet with a financial planner or something and get some professional advice.  I don't know what she does for a living, but you said her total debt would be about $300K?  That's about the debt a med student has when they finish med school.  I don't know what she does/makes, but med students can pay off their debts, so it might take her longer, but I think it could be done without filing for bankruptcy.   That's my two cents.

  • that was kind of my thinking, pand. besides that, she really doesn't NEED to have more than ONE vehicle (she has a car & a motorcycle), i would be selling off the cycle and taking any profit to pay off SOMETHING. sometimes she can be so mature about things. other times..not so much. i dont think she realizes that you cant simply file for bankruptcy-you have to complete a sort of training/info class now. and you have to really fit the requirements to file, and i'm not certain she does. some bankruptcy chapters wipe out your debt, others simply set you up with payment plans. i think she needs to educate herself on this. yet again i say....out of pocket therapy would have been cheaper to pay for than this crap.

I would, if it wasnt for DH's family. I feel like his grandmother would totally disown me, and she's kind of the "head hancho" in the family. Plus, I don't know how Dh's parents would react either.

  • I'm so glad I started this thread, too!

CCH: HOLY CRAP on the bill - that's insane! As for bankruptcy, I don't think it wipes out student loan debt. She may be able to get rid of the hospital bills, but the student loans will follow her forever. Disclaimer: I could be wrong on this, but that's what I've heard.

Eskamo: How exciting! I'm with Nvanhelden; I'd be jumping out of my skin! When do they tell you his exact homecoming date? I don't know how this stuff works. And feel free to post outfit ideas - I love shopping for other people! :)

Nvanhelden: sorry the interview wasn't what you expected, but congrats on getting licensed! I'm glad things are going in the right direction!

Belle: I'm sure we would've canceled, too. At least you're not scrapping the trip totally, though; your H's idea sounds awesome!

Melko: ugh, I hate the whole situation for you. I really hope UJ magically does a 180...but more than that, I hope your H gets a job that he really loves ASAP.

I agree with noron about bankruptcy. I'm pretty sure the only way to get rid of student loans is by paying them off.

They will never tell me his exact date. lol He will be able to tell me when he leaves Afghanistan, from there it is about 7-8 days of travel (depending on the weather). 48 before his plane is expected to land they will call me and let me know when he is landing and when I can pick him up. All of this can and probably will change. BUT I do have a date for when he will be out of Afghanistan! OMG I cannot tell y'all how excited I am. Every time I think about it I get giddy and energetic! haha It's soooo close!!!!!!!!

  • @Eskimo: I am so excited for you! Definitely let us know when you decide what you'll wear. (Although I must admit... I'd probably be the wife in the trench coat!)

@CCH: Yikes. Sorry to hear about the massive bill she's facing. I don't really know anything about bankruptcy, but I agree with the others that it should probably be a total last resort thing, if she qualifies at all.

@Melko: I can understand being conflicted about the driving thing. I don't think I would have the nerve if it was someone on DH's side of the family.

@Bellebride: I think you are wise to cancel your trip and just plan a whole new one. Even if the cruise isn't cancelled, I know I wouldn't want to spend all the time leading up to the trip wondering. Eastern Europe sounds fantastic, and I'm sure you'll have a great time even if it wasn't your first choice!

@Nvanhelden: Congrats on getting your license, and good luck on having the CNA requirement waived!

@Panda: Ugh. I hate it when people tell you they'll call after an interview and then don't. And yet it happens all the time. Don't give up, though -- one of the times that happened I actually did get the job but they FORGOT to tell me.

@Noron: You never answered Eskimo -- what's your update?

As for me, I (sort of) got a job! The principal at the school where I currently work has offered me a primary special education position next for next year. She has been told she will have the budget to hire 3 more special ed teachers, and I am her first choice. She also said that if something happens to open up in primary general ed, she would prefer to put me there instead (and I would prefer that too), but no matter what she will hire me for something. So I really have no idea what my job will be and I don't have a contract yet, but at least I know I will be staying right where I am. Hooray!

That's awesome news! You really like the school you're in now, right? I hope they get a primary gen ed opening!

As for my update...I don't really have one! I took a job-hunting break (the rejections were getting to me), and I've recently started up again, slowly. I'm 98.9% sure I didn't get the events job at work, but think I might be getting promoted soon, which is nice - although I'd still like to leave. I feel like I do SO MUCH, and none of it is valued. KWIM? Oh well; I'll find something good eventually!

Also, I think I'm running a 5k in March! That's exciting and scary :) And H and I are planning our September Mexican trip with his friends and our December Hawaii trip with my friends...those are keeping me going!

  • Wow, so not only am I way late in replying to this thread, but holy cow you ladies all seem to have full plates!! I feel very boring in comparison.

LO is doing well, we're still not 100% on a name, but I'm not really stressing. We have a very short list and we'll know what's right when the time comes. His nursery is just about done, there are just one or two small projects to finish for wall art that I am DIYing, and then I am moving on to rearranging. organizing and cleaning the rest of the house. We've been here for a year now, so it probably would have been done anyways, but nesting is making me crazy anxious to get it all done.

DH is very busy with work stuff, so much that some of it is actually coming home with him now, which has never happened before. I do what I can to help him, since most of what he's doing is trying to get ahead before LO arrives so he can take paternity leave guilt free.

    That's about all here.

  • I am super super late to this, my life was consumed for the past week with a downtown master plan for the city and I'm running on 2 hours of sleep...

I don't have Noron's memory and even though I just read all of those I know I would leave someone out if I tried to call everything out.  But anyway, I'm glad to get an update on everyones lives.

H was offered the job but through his own decision (and getting a promotion at his current job) he decided to turn it down.  He is now working on becoming management with his current company instead of starting over at the bottom again. Stupid business/sales jobs.

  • Wow, this is a lot of updates! Good idea, Nor!

Things with the photography are going well, I have my first wedding the day after the royal wedding (woo!) and I am going to a local workshop in 2 weeks and meeting a 'tog who I really, really, really look up to so I'm very excited for that. I'm also working on planning a bridal event up in Massachusetts with a couple other vendors who I am friends with, so I've been busy trying to get my website up to speed, my new business cards ordered, and some other fun stuff. I think I found an album company to work with; I love their style, very clean and simple and to the point. Love that.

So things are really starting to take off in a serious and awesome way. I currently have 6 weddings booked for this year so far, and one for next year, and quite a few inquiries. I am so eager to dive in even further and I am hoping that I can quit the craptastic day job at the end of this year. DH and I are aggressively paying off cc debt and my car, which will allow me to take a bit of a pay cut if necessary with quitting the steady job. And with having a wedding booked for next spring, we're hoping to TTC so we'd have a little one next winter!

Whooooooo that was a lot. Sorry.  <3
