Baby without owning a vehicle?

DH and I are thinking of spawning in a couple of years, but we have no desire whatsoever to own a vehicle until we absolutely have to (ie, move to the country, have a long commute to work, etc). Right now we live in the city and we walk/bus everywhere, and we are happy like this. Do you absolutely have to own a car to have a baby?

Worth noting is that the hospital where I would deliver our child if we chose to have one in the near future, is literally at the end of our street...it's one of the top children's hospitals in North America as well.

Re: Baby without owning a vehicle?

  • I live in the country and have to drive- I still say no!  Although I love having room, I'd totally be on board for walking, biking and using the bus.  I don't see where you'd need to go with a car if emergency healthcare is so close to you already.

I'd imagine a friend or taxi would take you to the hospital to deliver, if you were far enough along, but walking could be a really helpful experience as well (from what I've read).

  • In your situation, I think you'd be just fine without a car.

  • I don't see why you would need to have a car to have a baby if you don't need one now.

Though I have heard that they will not release your baby from the hospital without you showing that you have a car seat.  I would certainly hope that there would be an exception to this rule if you are not leaving in a car, but I would check first.

  • I work with low income people, many of whom take the bus with every age of child from infants on up.  They seem to be fine.

I would think that you would just want to talk this over with your OB/the hospital admin. and you'll have your answer.

If you absolutely MUST have a car/car seat - maybe a friend or family member with a baby around the same time could "fill in" for you?

Not saying that you should ever borrow someone's car seat - but if the only time you will EVER use it is for the 1 minute drive to your house just for the purpose of satisfying hospital staff, I can't imagine that it would hurt, especially considering the cost of car seats.

One of my friends lives in a big city, close to the hospital; she and her DH walked the baby home in the car seat/stroller travel system.

  • It might be good to have a car seat, even if you don't have a car. I don't have kids myself, but it seems like most people use them to carry their kids places (even in the grocery store, etc).

    Just my $0.02

  • If you don?t need a car now, you won?t need one with a baby. Lots of parents in big cities don?t have cars.

I do think they usually have a carseat for rides in other peoples? cars and taxis. I would recommend it. You can get a safe carseat for $60, so it?s not a big deal.

  • We don't own a car and haven't for the duration of our child's life. We bike every where and when she was an infant, we walked and took public transit.

It's possible. You have to be motivated to do it, but it can be done and done well, at that.

We took a cab home from the hospital that I gave birth at. A friend brought the car seat by after Liliana arrived, so we didn't have to worry about taking it with us. I would definitely check with the hospital about their policy with that - ours would not let any parents leave without one. They want to make sure that you know how to buckle it properly, that you have one and don't need assistance getting one, etc.

You could always bring it and click it into the stroller for the walk home.
