Let's talk mattresses...where and what to buy?

DH and I are in desperate need of a new mattress.  We need to be somewhat modest about cost (although I have no clue what a middle of the road mattress will cost us) and we don't know where to start shopping?  We don't need a new box spring, just the mattress.  Are we best off just going to a place like Slumberland and starting there?

We don't want a Sleep Number or Tempurpedic either, I've researched both and we've decided they are off of our list, plus we agree on firmness level, so we don't really need a Sleep Number.

We live in the Apple Valley area if that helps...I just don't know where to start!  thanks!

  • We LOVE our Original Mattress Factory mattress. Made in MN, reasonable delivery cost, they set up the bed & moved our old bed for us, and our bed is comfortable. We went with one of their top of the line beds and it was still under $1200 for a queen mattress & boxspring.

  • I would recommend checking out the Original Mattress Factory.  They have great prices and are one of the few places that still have double sided pillow tops.  The double sided aspect was really important to us because we were replacing our old mattress due to indentations and thought it was a waste to buy a mattress that was no flip.

  • I used to sell mattress/boxsprings at a furniture store and a few things I learned were-

The box spring is just as important as the mattress. In fact one of the brand name reps that came to train us said that if someone came in to buy a new mattress and said they didn't want to buy a box that he would rather see them buy the box not the mattress because they are equally important.

Rotating matresses are not necessary. In fact those that are made that way the weight of the mattress on top of the layer that is faced downward ruins that layer in little to no time. He said that they make them because people insist on them - supply & demand.

I used to sell Serta, Simmons, Tempurpedic and a private label the store had made. Of all those I would get a Simmons. They have individual pocket coils that are not attached to each other, so they form to your body and give you good support. The firmness then comes into play with the thicker steel of the coil. Other mattresses, the coils are attached so they are not able to come up to each part of your body for support, and the firmer the mattress the more the coils are attached to each other. Memory foam mattress are good too. We have a Serta memory foam (I got it before I worked there) and we really like it but it was $1800.00 for a king. I will be looking at Simmons when we have to get another. Also - Simmons are the best beds if you are not going to have a boxspring (platform beds) or if you really do not want to buy the boxspring.
