protein bar recs?

What is your favorite protein bar and where do you get them? (We have a Sam's club membership if that helps any.)

Do you eat them before/after workouts? For breakfast? As a snack?

I'm looking to have them before/after workouts (we work out around 4pm, eat lunch at 12noon and don't get home to get dinner on the table until about 6ish)

Re: protein bar recs?

  • I've started making these:

    http://www.activelifecooking.com/2009/05/peanut-butter-and-honey-granola-bars.html

I add 1/3 cup protein powder to them along with ground flax seed,  wheat germ, almond butter in place of the peanutbutter, no brown sugar, and no salt.  I like that I can add the flavors I want according to what I've craving.  My favorites lately are with chocolate protein powder and sliced almonds, dried blueberries and no sugar banana chips, and plain with sunflower seeds.

I've been making about 2 batches of them on Sundays and they last all week.  And when I crave chocolate I've been sprinkling 1/4 dark chocolate chips on the mixture and sppreading them around after they melt.  It only adds 140 calories to the pan.

Before I started making them, I was eating a banana before working out and the Kashi Go Lean Crunchy Bars that have 9 grams of protein after I worked out.

  • So..this is more how your recipe looks?

    • 2 cups Old Fashioned Oats
    • 2 tbsp of your favorite ?chaser?: such as millet (shown), flax seed, flax seed meal, wheat germ, etc. (optional) (do you use 1 tbsp flax, 1 tbsp wheat germ?)
    • 1/3 cup of PROTEIN POWDER (optional, but gives nutritional boost)
    • 1/2 cup Smooth ALMOND Butter (I use natural/organic)
    • 1/2 cup Honey
    • 1/2 cup of your favorite ?additives?: sunflower seeds, raisins, cranberries, dried blueberries, figs, almonds, pecans, whatever your heart contents (this is where you add your chocolate chips, blueberries etc)

Now, here's a really dumb question. Where do I buy flax seed, protein powder and wheat germ?

Get protein powder on amazon, WAY cheaper than in the stores.

Flax seed and wheat germ are in the organic dry good aisles at Cub. sometimes you can find wheat germ in the cereal aisle too.

  • I only eat protein bars after I work out, but I really like the Snickers Marathon bars. If you're looking for something cheaper, Market Pantry (Target brand) makes this "nutrition bar" in both double chocolate and chocolate peanut butter with 12g of protein. They are REALLY REALLY good. Can't beat 79 cents either.

  • I like Clif bars.  You can buy them at Sam's Club.  I like that they aren't too high in sugar.  The regular ones have 10 or 12 grams of protein, and the Builder's Bars have 20.
  • I used to eat Luna Bars all the time but then got sick of them. Now I love Special K Chocolatey Chip Meal Protien Bars, sometimes I will put some natural peanut butter on them too...super yummy! I eat mine for breakfast during the week.

I do use 1 tbs flax & 1 tbsp wheatgerm.  Actually I got both the ground flax and the wheat germ in Cub by the healthfood section.  I buy the nuts and dried berries in the bulk sections.  The protein powder I got at the Vitamin Shoppe because Dh is having lab band surgery and needed a good protein powder.
