Is this normal? (eating related)

I posted a couple of months ago about how Lily wasn't eating much. Well, she still isn't eating much. We've tried a ton of different pureed fruits and veggies (jarred and homemade), and the only ones she will sometimes have a few bites of are bananas and sweet potatos. So then I moved onto finger foods. We've done sweet potatoes, green beans, bits of pear, black beans, canned chicken, blueberries, bits of banana, pasta, Mum Mums, Cheerios, and puffs. She always tries things a couple of times, which makes me happy, but most of the time it's met with a grimace and a full-body shudder. The only fruit/veggie the eats sometimes is banana. Oh, and she does like to suck on apple slices. And the only thing she likes in the mesh feeder is ice.

She will eat Cheerios, puffs, and Mum Mums until the cows come home, though. And she eats a lot of baby cereal - but it has to be Happy Bellies brand cereal, she won't touch the Earth's Best stuff I bought her. So, at least she's getting her iron.

I'm just wondering if this is still in the realm of normal, and when/if I would need to worry about having such a picky eater. I feel like I am going to be nursing her until she goes to college!

  • I have no idea what is normal or not, but I just wanted to say that she looks happy and healthy to me.  That picture is so adorable that I want to SCREAM every time I see it!

  • I'd ask your Ped next appointment but I know mine always says there is no "normal" amount at this age, it's just getting them to try foods other than the bottle. Sounds like you may have a little difficulty when it comes time to get her to really eat, but she definitely looks healthy! That's always my meter with Caroline, regardless of the fact that she goes close to the edge with low percentiles. She's got plump in all the right places and is happy :)
  • I wouldn't worry too much at this point, just keep offering!  She's got a couple months where the milk is her main source of nutrition.  I bet she'll get into it soon.

  • Eating is a strange thing with kiddos. Like other ladies said, just keep trying and offering. Maybe you can find something she'll eat.

  • Thanks everyone. (And thanks for the compliment on the pic, clouts!) I am trying really hard to make meals pleasant and respect her "I'm done" signals, but it's sometimes a source of tension between MH and I because he pushes her to eat more. I am soooo paranoid of creating bad eating habits!

I am super happy and proud that she is a little chunky monkey! I'm excited to see what she weighs at her 9 month appointment next week!

  • She is still pretty young. I wouldn't be worried at this point, I would just keep offering different foods, and continue to offer foods that have already been introduced.

Also, when you sit down to eat dinner, is she there in the highchair eating her dinner as well? This always helped us. She saw us eating, and also wanted to eat. I did a modified BLW, and let her at least try most of the things we had at each meal, unless it was terribly unhealthy.
