Food Storage

I feel terrible that the one of the only things I use plastic baggies for is storing cheese. I'd love to know if anyone has suggestions as to what sort/brand of container to get to keep opened cheese in the fridge.

Also, I'm looking for a container to store loaves of bread in, for when I make some or buy a loaf at the bakery. (again, trying to get rid of the need for those darn baggies!)

Thanks in advance for the recs!

Re: Food Storage

  • I'm curious about this too.  We use plastic bags for cheese too.

  • Do you mean when you buy a block of cheese?  I just try not to rip the entire wrapper off except for how much I want to cut and then wrap it back up and stick it in a small plastic container.  Not sure if that's the answer you were looking for.

  • Or what about in a resuable sandwich/snack bag?  I really like the ones I got from Love For Earth on Etsy - http://www.etsy.com/shop/LoveForEarth?ga_search_query=love+for+earth&ga_search_type=seller_usernames

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with using plastic bags for those things, so long as you wash and reuse the bags.
  • We buy some cheese from a farm and the owner said the best way to store it is to wrap it in parchment paper, cheese paper or something that will let it breathe, which slows mold growth.  She said you can also put foil around the parchment paper for longer storage life.  Cheese doesn't last long in our house (we buy it in small quantities as need) so I don't go through all that trouble and just put it in a pyrex container.

I've used wax paper (secured w/ rubber band) or parchment, then inside a plastic bag (generally a reused bread bag).

  • I don't usually buy cheese, but I have a bunch of glass Pyrex storage containers in various sizes that I use for basically everything. I would use them for cheese if I had it. Smile
  • My friend has an awesome solution for this. He kind of cuts the plastic wrap around the cheese about half way down (cuts all around it). Then he just slides that part over the top of the cheese block.

I have this (for bread...I don't have a good solution for cheese as we're still using plastic bags) and love it.  It seems to work very well for us.

  • I have one of those lockable containers. I've been using it for about a month and it's working great.

Ditto. I have had 1 box of sandwich bags (100) for over 2 years. I keep rinsing them and reusing them until they are un-useable. For most things I have the hard plastic "Wonder" sandwich containers, and our plastic storage containers are BPA free.
