Sewing machine: Singer 241-12?

There's a 241-12 Singer industrial for $150 with a table. Do you think that's worth the price?

ETA: Not getting the machine from post below as it turns out the plug was from a lamp, not the machine.

  • if one of the regular sewing ladies on here doesn't respond, you might want to post over on the crafts board, b/c they have lots of advice on sewing machines.

  • I don't know anything about the machine or what is an appropriate price, but here is a manual that you can look at.

  • Thanks! Totally didn't even dawn on me till you said so!

  • I didn't think of sending you to the craft board either.   In the header of the board there is a link to the craft board faqs, where you can find some information on sewing machine buying.

I don't know how many people there have professional machines or sew heavy stuff, but maybe someone has more experience with Singers than I do.

  • That's the machine I have!!! It was my grandfathers who was a tailor, he bought it in the 60's used, it was made in '46. Its a great machine. Mine has a fast motor on it and it is powerful. I am still fixing it up, the cork seal needs replacement but it runs really well.
  • Oh and from what I have researched about them they are worth round $300 in working order and mainly sought after by leather workers and for thicker materials. Its a beast!
  • I just talked to the seller, an 82 yr old, and he says I don't have to worry about anything as long as I put oil in it, its a self oiler and I don't have to get anything fixed and is currently in working condition. I really want it now knowing I am getting a deal!! We will pick it up tomorrow if DH agrees to bring a beast in our apartment! LOL! He just got a raise and told me I can have $200 to spend anyhow I want so this is what I want! I am so excited!

  • Well good luck with it! I just recently cleaned mine up, its been sitting in my dads garage for 20 years. It needs oil too. When you get it we can swap pictures of our 241-12's.

Mine looks kind of like this, with a green table. I got this pic off google images.

  • I am looking for some helpful information.  I now own my late grandmothers sewing machines.  I would like to use them for everything including leather.  I would like to keep only 1 as I don't have the room for both.  They are both Singers, models 31 15 and 241-12.  She worked in the upholstery industry and used both of these machines regularly.  Any input would be greatly appreciated since the internet is not helping me very much.
