visiting Chicago alone on business
I'll be in Chicago March 7-11 for business...all alone...what does one do??? I've only been to Chicago one other time and it was several years ago with SIL/BIL who lived in Valpo, IN so they'd been before and could help navigate...I'm terrified of getting lost!
I'll be busy with work 8-5 but in the evenings what should I do throughout the week?
Re: visiting Chicago alone on business
If you like theater, you're in a great area to see some shows. The Loop has the Goodman Theater, as well as multiple theaters that host Broadway in Chicago shows. Also, Lyric Opera is near the Loop as well.
Chicago Art Institute is free on Thursday evenings, so you can definitely walk down there. It's a really beautiful museum, and boasts one of the best gift shops in the city.
Shopping is plentiful on State Street south of the river or on Michigan Avenue north of the river. I love State Street Macy's - it's worth the trip.
Don't fret too much about getting lost - carry some cash with you so if you do get turned around, you can jump in a cab back to your hotel. Taxis are everywhere here and you'll never have a problem finding one.
If I had four nights in the city, I'd probably do a schedule like this:
-Monday: Shopping on State Street and dinner at the Walnut Room in Macy's
-Tuesday: Theater downtown, dinner beforehand at the Italian Village or Petterino's
-Wednesday: See some jazz - Andy's in River North is a fantastic "walk in and sit down" establishment. Beforehand, grab a cheese flight at Bin 36.
-Thursday: Dinner at The Gage (best burger ever) on Michigan Avenue followed by free Thursday at the Art Institute.
Marcy, thanks so much for the ideas. I'm really looking forward to my trip. I'm sure I'll find something to do. If nothing else, I definitely have some work I could do remotely...ugh!
What's the best place around the area for some real chicago pizza?
PP had great suggestions. I'd also recommend check out Millenium Park. It should be pretty close to your hotel.
Don't worry too much about the bus, just double check the # before you get on b/c many stops have numerous buses that stop there. Don't forget to pull the cord b/c the bus won't stop at every stop if there's no one waiting and no one requested, they keep going.
Are you thinking deep dish or thin crust? I'm not a deep dish fan. I love the thin crust at Pizano's... there's one at wabash and madison.
Ready for summer!
Um...pull the cord? This is going to be a dumb question, but I've never dealt with riding a bus before. What cord are you speaking of?
I want to try deep dish.
Don't worry you'll see it. There's a cord running on each side of the bus. You pull it to signal the driver that you want to get off at the next stop.
Ready for summer!
