Hello everyone...My DH and I aren't going to the beach this year because our vacation leave doesn't match up with one another and due to my work I have some black out dates (yuck!) However, we were thinking about a fun long wknd trip that we could do and I immediately thought of Boston. It's not far away and I've never been north, I tend to go south or west, so I'm looking for ideas. I didn't know if anyone on here has ever traveled to Boston and if so I'm open for any suggestions! Thanks so much in advance.

We went to Boston a couple of years ago for a friend's wedding and then stayed a few days longer.  We really enjoyed the Freedom Trail, the aquarium and our day trip to Salem.  We did a bunch of things in the 3 days we were there, so if you want a copy of our itinerary let me know.  We stayed outside the city, but if we were to do it again I would have stayed either closer to a subway or in the city because we almost didn't get parking at the subway a couple of days!

Boston is a lot of fun, we went up for a weekend last Fall.   DH pricelined the hotel, ended up with the Marriott Copley place ~$100 a night it was in a great area to get to the T, Backbay, Newbury St, and the ballpark.   

We did the Freedom Trail walk http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/ it is actually a very walkable city, the one day stopping at Mike's  (http://www.mikespastry.com/ --- most amazing canolis and pastries ever, but they only take cash)  and Feneuil hall http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/   

Breakfast/brunch at the Pourhouse was fun, crazy, but fun.   We spent the one evening at McGreevy's - only complaint for an Irish bar you'd think they have a regular ruben on the menu... they had a turkey one. . 

 The other day we spent with friends running around and then went to a Red Sox game (DH found random tickets on Stub Hub for a game while we were there)

 

The T pass was $15 for a 7 day pass http://www.mbta.com/fares_and_passes/subway/  it was cheaper to get the 7 day pass, than a day pass ($9)    ***However, it is a known problem that this card will randomly not read - if the station is attended just ask the attendant and they will let you through the gate... if it isn't you end up following other people through the gates.  We were told we'd be okay as long as we had a valid pass.

I cannot recommend hotels, but I used to live up in the Boston area and if you get a chance jump on the train and visit the Lexington/Concord area it is really nice and if you go to the outskirts (west) there are some interesting sites.  We used to go to Waldon Pond, it is a beautiful area...I'm jealous, I haven't been back in almost 20 years.

I enjoyed Boston, though I was only there a day on our way to Maine.  Walked the Freedom Trail which was really neat, as well as went on the Swan Boats in Boston Commons.  I like that sort of thing though.  We ate at Union Oyster House, the oldest restaurant in Boston which had great food too.

DH and I go to the Boston area every other year to visit friends (I lived there for 5 years, so I have a lot of friends in the area).  I also recommend the Freedom Trail.  Also, if you can, I recommend a whale watching tour and the Aquarium.  If you don't want to spend an entire day on the Freedom Trail, a Duck Tour covers the same things, but faster and expensive (most of Freedom Trail is free to see). 

I also recommend either getting a hotel right in the city or close to a train station.  If you get one in the city, you can leave your car parked (unless you decide to take a day trip to somewhere like Salem) and just take the train everywhere.

If you're baseball fans, I highly recommend a Red Sox game.  If they are not home, or it's out of season, you can also just take a tour of Fenway Park.  I can't remember how much it is, but we didn't think it was very expensive.  You get to stand on top of the green monster and go behind the scoreboard.  We're big baseball fans, so this was a huge thing for us.
