Pool Owners: type of fencing?

We close in two weeks on our new home in E Mesa (yay) and I have to gate the pool area.  The house itself of course has a brick fence all around the yard.

Most people these days are supplying those black netting things that stick in the holes in the ground and remove for parties.  I am told I have to go to a pool installer for those hard steel fencing that is more permanent.

What do you have and do you like it? I thought I'd prefer the hard steel but the lack of removability (my word?) is a bummer and it can rust and need painting...........
The mesh seemed 'not safe' though they claim it is, if I went that way I would get the highest (5'?) versus the 4' or so since I don't want my daughter dragging over a patio chair and working her way over.

I also want to get one of those floaty things that alarm when something/one enters the pool, cuz I'm paranoid that way.

Help!  What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Pool Owners: type of fencing?

  • We have the netting type fence and I felt the same way as you before we got this one.  I thought for sure I wanted the wrought iron.  We had both types in mind and ended up going with the netting.  We really like it.

Ours is not black, it is a desert sand color.  It is impossible to climb!!  It would fall inward and no child (in my opinion) would be able to make it across.  I love that it can come down someday, although I don't think you'd be taking it down for a party, I'm sure it's more work than it's worth!  BUT... someday when our kids are gone we can take it down and save it if we need it.  The other thing I love is that it has a really long warranty.  I can't remember but I think it's over ten years.

  • I don't have a pool but myu cousin does and he has the net.  They swear by it and I remember once when my little cousin was running and playing around fell on the net and he just bounced right off never hitting the water.  I hope that kind of helps on if they are safe or if they work or not.  =)

  • We have the mesh kind too. It was FAR less expensive than a wrought iron fence and the studies I've read say it is just as safe.

The company that did ours was Arizona Childproofers - I got multiple quotes and theirs was the best. We're really happy with how clean and professional it looks, while providing the safety we need.

  • Its a discussion we have had. so far we are undecided as to what we will be doing. I understand about dragging a chair and climbing over the fence. I was "that" crafty child.

my DH has however already informed the grandparents that if they want any overnighters at their house they will have a fence installed.

from what everyones saying the removable fence sounds good

  • Thanks, girls.  Your testimonies really assuage my fears......and thanks for the ref on the vendor that came in cheapest for you.  I'll call them tomorrow.
  • My parent's have had the black netting fence around the pool for over 14 years and still recommend it to others. It has survived 3 toddlers and now they keep it down and put it up FOR parties when other people have children over. It's really easy to take down, it's just a little bulky.

As for kids climbing over, it doesn't hold weight so there really isn't a way for them to pull themselves up and over.

  • My parents installed the black netting fence after my kids were born. I don't know how my mom feels about it now, but I really love it! There is no way my kids could climb it, even working together to jump the fence. And it's easy to take the panels down and put them back up.
