Talk to me about Cilantro

I container garden on my back porch, just a few items, but last  year was my first year with cilantro. I love this stuff. Yum!

My question is, how do you get it to keep growing, it seemed like I only a got a few little bunches out of it to clip off before it died and I had to plant another. Can you keep the same plant all summer and harvest off of it?

Re: Talk to me about Cilantro

  • Cilantro goes to seed readily, so you need to plant a new one every 2-3 weeks to keep a supply. Also, it bolts in heat, so you probably won't have any during the peak of the summer months.
  • Thanks! I suspected that it must be a short lived plant, I'll just have to plant a new one every once is a while.

Talk to you about cilantro? Sure. It's yummy in salsa. But it's also easier to buy fresh cilantro than to grow it (at least IMO). Tomatoes and peppers are a cinch, but I'll go to market for the onions and cilantro. Good luck and happy gardening!

  • it is a weed. I don't have to worry about it. I find it all over my yard, growing in my hedgerow, roses, etc.

  • I tried to grow some from seed last summer with no luck.  I thought perhaps I didn't pay enough attention to it and just bought it from the market.  I just bought a house and a coworker bought me a cilantro plant as a house warming gift--and it's already drooping!   Any advice on how to keep it happy?
