How can I rid of it?

Re: Dog Smell?

  • Get rid of the dog!

    Oh, I kill me!

Is the smell in a rug, or just overall the place smells like dog?

  • I am going to get rid of all their area rugs. The whole house is hard woods except for the basement, which is where I think the dog resided most of the time.

They did absolutely no  cleaning whatsoever.  The place is filthy and I couldn't even get in until Sunday at 5:00 to start cleaning.  I had to pay for a babysitter and everything on Sunday night.

I am going to ask them to have the carpet cleaned in the basement.  Shouldn't  that be pretty standard?  They didn't even vacuum up the dog fur.

  • Yeah, I always shampoo the carpet in our rental in between tenants.  I don't know if it's standard per se, but I do it just out of pride for my house, ya know?

That's pretty crappy that they didn't even vacuum.

The smell could even be in the hardwood.  Take some warm soapy water and add about a third (ratio 3:1 water to vinegar) white vinegar.  Mop up the floors and then dry them quick.

  • I would definitely ask them to have the rug cleaned - that's just gross. Although when we moved into this house in NY it wasn't cleaned either. Sucks.

I say clean the carpet, replace area rugs, and I've had luck with some of those odor crystal things that absorb smells, not that have fragrance. Also, my laundry detergent works well to help neutralize odors (Rockin Green) on carpets and other things too.

Good luck!  Our storage room smelled like dog forever. I didn't care b/c it's my storage room but all of the above seemed to help.
