Hello!

My family and I are moving to Charlottesville this summer and I wanted to stop by and introduce myself and ask a few questions.

Any places to stay away from when we look for houses? What's the skinny on Charlottesville City vs. Albemarle County schools? Which (if you have children) do you prefer? Any good recommendations for peditricians? Dentists? family doctors? Realtors?

My husband will have to move before I do so any recs on apartments or short term housing? We're looking at a six month lease.

TIA!!!

Re: Hello!

  • You really can't go wrong with any of the county schools (I will admit I am biased, I teach).  The county schools are excellent.

You will like Cville! It has a lot to offer and is a great place to live.

  • Welcome!  I adore C'ville.  I'd advise to stay away from the Corner area (right by UVA), as it tends to be loud and heavily undergrad...anything on Jefferson Park Ave. is similarly student-heavy.  I don't recommend Eagle's Landing apt. complex, as it's pretty lousy and loud, but there are some better ones near it, like the Woodlands.  There are some sketchy parts of Commonwealth and Hydraulic Rd., too.  Depending on where you and/or your DH will be working, the Hollymeade area might be good...it's just north of town, so it's a little quieter and more family-oriented, and there's a shopping center with a Target, grocery store, restaurants, etc., so it's still convenient.  Pantops could be a good area to look at, too.  Basically, the further you get from UVA, the better.
  • Thanks ladies!! Wishes... what grade/subject do you teach? I'm a HS teacher, not really looking forward to the "hunt" since C-ville sounds like it doesn't have many people leaving/retiring... sigh.
