It is time for me to get a new phone, I am with Verizon, it seems like most of their phones are smartphones and there are fewer and fewer feature phones. I am just trying to decide if a smartphone is something I need or not. Are apps free or do you have to buy those? Dumb question but what will the apps do for me? I email and occasionally FB on my phone but I don't need to know everytime someone updates their status.
Re: Do I need a smartphone?
There are a lot of free apps out there. And they range from Fb to games to weather apps. Then there are ones that cost money, usually it's not a lot. I have a blackberry with verizon now, and I don't think I've paid for one app yet. The iphone and droids however, that may be a different story.
I'm guessing since you mentioned email and FB that you already pay the extra $30 for the data package?
I just do the $10 data package....that is the other thing.....an extra $20 on top of that seems like a lot more if I'm not going to use it....
I thought I didn't need a smartphone either. I could not make up my mind if I wanted to spend the extra money. I finally decided to get an iphone after debating for about 7 months. Now I would hate to do without it. No I don't need it but now I really want it.
I'm not sure I could survive without my smartphone. I have a HTC Eris on Verizon and bought it a year ago. I was ambivalent, but hubby convinced me to do it. Within a week, I felt like I couldn't live without it and I still feel that way. Most of the apps are free. I have a couple of dozen and haven't paid for a single one. Hubby has a couple hundred and has paid for one, which cost him about $2. My fave app is "Cheap Gas Buddy" which tells me the cheapest gas relative to my current location. It was a free one, but it's saved me quite a few dollars.
The good news is that if you buy one and hate it, you can always go back to a standard phone once the contract is up, which with Verizon is about 20 months.
My mother got the Verizon iPhone and she loves it. I have the AT&T iPhone and I love mine. It will let you get to your email, search the internet, you can get useful apps and fun apps, etc.
Happy shopping!
Nobody NEEDS a smartphone! We just want them!
I have an iphone. Do I need it? No. But, I do like having it. I like being super-organized and there are apps that let me do that. I keep track of my to-do list, my grocery list, my weekly dinner menu, my three email addresses (1 personal, 2 for my jobs), read the local news and NPR, play games or check out youtube when I'm in need of immediate entertainment, keep track of travel itineraries, etc. These are things I would do with paper and pencil a year ago. Now I do it on the phone. If you don't want the phone, don't get one. But, if you decide to get one, make the most of it and use it.
