~NB~ (and everyone else) Crepe Myrtles
I saw your other post about the the abuse of Crepe Myrtle pruning. I hate it. HATE it! There is a house in my neighborhood that had goregous Crepe Myrtles. I always loved driving by the house and seeing them in bloom. Now there are new homeowners and each year they whack back the tops of the trees. The trees are pretty mature (I'm thinking at least 7-8 yrs old) and they look horrid in the summer.
It makes me want to cry.
I've never topped my Crepe Myrtle. I only remove the suckers from the base of the tree and the old seedpods. Occasionally, I remove smaller limbs that inch over the walkway, but that's about it.
I don't know why people think it's ok to whack these trees to death. How in the world did that practice start?

Re: ~NB~ (and everyone else) Crepe Myrtles
Good question; I don't know. I think most of it happens because people tend to follow example. Pretty much like mulch volcanoes....
I recently had a booking from one of last years design clients, to whom I had recommended pruning of a large Crape. Well, she didn't hire me to do that, she hired me for something else, and "pruned" the tree herself before I arrived.
I didn't take any pictures, but I'm sure you can image what I saw. When she solicited by opinion, and I expressed sympathy for the vandalism to her property.
Oh my lord! The people around the corner from us did that and I couldn't figure out why. It looks horrible now. I can't imagine that it will look much better in the summer. Is it supposed to improve growth or something?
