GB Memory and Hard drive in laptops

I have no idea what we need.  We definitely want a 15.6" screen and I'm pretty certain I want an Intel i3 processor.  We're looking to spend less than $500.  I'm liking the Toshiba Satellite b/c I love the number pad on the side.  I found one for about $480 w/ 4GB memory and 500GB HD and then one for $350 w/ 2GB memory and 250GB HD.

Our needs are mininmal, web surfing, Itunes, uploading digital pictures, and my work's VPN.

Would the 2/250 suffice or should we pay the extra $130 for the 4/500?

We're also looking at an Asus, but have never really heard of the brand.  Is it good?

Re: GB Memory and Hard drive in laptops

  • Asus is an absolutely awesome brand.  I've had an Asus laptop for going on 5 years now and while I have had to replace the battery it has otherwise served me well.  Before that DH and I both had Asus motherboards in our PCs.  One thing though, is that Asus had terrible CS if you do ever have a problem.  My laptop came from Newegg, but the docking station had issues and we had to deal with Asus to get it fixed.  It was not a good experience and my understanding is that I'm not alone.  :(  I'd still pick Asus over Toshiba though, but that's just because my work Toshiba laptops haven't been good.

I'd pay the extra $130 for the larger HD and more memory.  You can run Windows 7 with 2 GB of memory, but you'll be happier with 4.  It's also so much easier to fill up a hard drive these days with music, pictures, and movie downloads.

I agree with pp - spend the extra money to double the memory and hard drive. I've read reviews on Windows 7 that say you can run it ok on 2GB of memory, but most have 4 now so I'd definitely get that. The bigger hard drive is also much better, since digital picture files are getting bigger with the better resolution cameras, so it'll fill up faster than you'd think.

Never heard of Asus, so I'm no help there.
