Cloth Diaper Question

For those who cloth diaper, could you please share your wash routine?

We have mostly bumGenius 3.0 All-In-One Deluxe dipes, and I was re-reading through the wash instructions, and they just seem a bit excessive.  Is it really necessary to wash cold, then wash hot, then rinse twice?  Can I just do one cold or hot wash and one rinse?

Has anyone tried to cut corners and regretted it?  Also, what detergent do you recommend?  Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA  Smile

Re: Cloth Diaper Question

  • Yep I wash cold, Wash hot and then do 1 extra rinse.

That being said you have AIO's and we have mostly fitteds ( you have more layers in between that need to get cleaned out)

Don't cut corners, you will regret it whne you get the stinkies.

We use Crunchy Clean and LOVE it, I switched to rockin green and had the stinkies, no stinkies when we switched back.

Also flip your AIO's inside out when you dry them, they will dry faster.

Let me know if you have any questions

  • i do a cold rinse to get rid of poop and crap, then a heavy duty wash cycle on hot with an extra rinse. i've never had any luck with the "cd" detergents and use original powder tide.

also i know your bg instructions say you need to wash your diapers 6 times or something, you don't since you don't have any natural fibers. with mf you just need to wash once. if you had organic or hemp or prefolds or something, then you'd need to wash many times (or boil depending on what you have) to prep them

  • Unfortunately...if you cut corners you may get stink or repelling. We just got frontloaders so we also throw in a wet towel to trick our machine since you need the max water to help clean. Otherwise our routine is the same . Cold wash no detergent, heavy duty hot wash with detergent and 2 cold rinses. We line dry outside to get rid of the stains from the poop and then everything without pul goes in the dryer to fluff up. I have a few aios and i agree if u turn them side out drying time will go faster. We use both planet and rockin green hard rock without any problems.

when i was using the bg's i actually turned them inside out before putting them into the wetbag/pail. i found they got cleaner if washed inside out, especially with the microfiber! that stuff holds onto stink like no other

  • Ooo, i will have to try that, we never had stink with our aios but we didnt use them as much as our pockets or prefolds. I am trying to steer clear of the stink.

since yours is still so little and is changed more often, you probably won't have anything like that for a while. mine was mostly in my nighttime diapers but i've always had an issue with microfiber holding onto stink and am not really a huge fan of it. i don't have any mf diapers anymore

  • I do one cold and one hot and 2 times rinsing. This makes them dry immediately after wash, and thus, no way that they will stink. I use tide. I went in for cloth diapering for my second kid and found it great. But since I wasn?t sure which ones to go for, I had a difficult time due the leaks and ill fitting. I then tried the cloth diapering section at aBaby; got the perfect fit and no leaks along with extra inserts that can be washed separately.
