Clickie: How is your worklife?

Re: Clickie: How is your worklife?

  • Yay for a clicky poll!

I'm special... because in my current job, I'm miserable.  I work way too much (hello, 75 hour weeks, back to back, without OT pay), and am underappreciated (I've heard my manager talking negatively about me and others, despite the fact that I AM smart and I AM working hard).  It's not super bad right now, because of the seasons, but when we were close to deadlines last fall I would cry a lot about work - sometimes at the office, sometimes at home.

    BUT

The happy news is that I have 6 days, 3 hours left, and then I'll be starting a new job!  I'm REALLY optimistic about it, because I did better homework about it than I did before coming to my current job.  I asked specific questions about the level of overtime expected, and what was actually worked last year, and I asked it at different levels of interviewing to see if different people gave me a different answer.  I feel like it's going to be ten times better.  And the ladies I'll be going to work with seem really cool - like, not the dramatic witches that like to stir the pot, which I currently work with!  (Since giving my notice last Friday, the manager mentioned above has said one word to me - hey - and that was a little earlier today!)

So anyway, I'm hoping that if we redo this same clicky in a month, I can put that I'm super-duper happy and satisfied, and not the special snowflake, lol.

  • Hey Angie - looks like it's just you and me around here today. No wonder the board is dead.

Well, I chose the not satisfied because I'm bored out of my mind option. In fact, I'm so bored I'm reading that unpopular opinion thread from the bump. :p  It's pretty entertaining.

  • Unsatisfied because I'd rather be focusing on other life goals at the moment.
  • I put pretty satisfied.  I *love* the company I work for, but maybe not much the position.  The position requires a lot some things which I am not qualified for and I get frustrated because it's not really what I went to school for.  I get by, but I'd very much rather be doing something else within the same company.

  • I'm so torn about my job.  I like it (have been there about 6 years) and they let me move over a year ago so I now work remote, which means no commute.  But it also means being by myself all day.  And, now it's requiring me to travel back and forth to DC (where I was and our office is) more, which I don't care for.  But.. it is the perfect job to have if we do get pregnant because I can go to part time and work from home (assuming they'd let me).  So I guess I'll just continue on for now.

  • I chose "satisfied for a different reason" because I work from home - I dont LOVE my job - but I LOVE that I can work from home.  Previously I was dealing with a 1.5 hour commute (each way) every day - working from home puts so much extra time into my day...I can wake up and start work, at the end of the day, I'm already home.  I feel blessed that I have a job that I am good at, and I'm able to do it from home.  Its by no means my "dream job" but its too good to part with.
  • "Not satisfied for a different reason"

I work in a Kids Club at a gym and lately it's been really tough and challenging for me. I can no longer comfortable bend down or pick up children and that is about 95% of my job. I'm grateful I have a job that is working with my school schedule and doctor's appointments, but I'm only working 3-4 days a week and they have me working the later shift (4-8:45 pm) and I've been so tired lately. I'm grateful to be working, just tired and exhausted :(

On a side note, my dream job (In which I'm currently attending school for, but still need to apply to the program <-- I procrastinate, but I'm on the right track towards getting the degree) would be an ultrasound technician... so basically working with Comprehensive Medical Imaging. In a few months or after baby is born, I'd like to get into being a hostess or waitress... something along those lines.. just so I'm making minimum wage + tips more than 15 hours a week... it'd be great.

  • Yeah, I'm out of work again.  But I guess I can't complain because it's giving me time to sort out the family issues around my mom's death and I'm fortunate that there's no financial emergency.  HOWEVER, I would much rather just be at the office everyday than dealing with weird/depressing family stuff.  Hopefully things will improve on the job front.
  • I actually love my job (and the job they're training me for to be honest.)  But I really hate the environment sometimes.  Full disclosure- there was a TON of lame petty bullshit drama yesterday, so I'm still a little sore about that.

But we're working to transition me from my current split position (25% old job, 75% new job) to being 100% new job, which will make my life so much easier.  One less group of people to get the bullshit from.  That all sounds super vague, but I don't know how to explain it better without writing a novel.

Linds- do you mind me asking where you work? I'm always intrigued by people who work from home..... intrigued, and jealous. ;)

I'm in the same boat as you. I love my job, but I hate the environment. It's only a couple people that cause the drama. But the amount that they cause is more than enough for me.

I also do not like my commute. If I leave the house five minutes later than normal, it adds an extra twenty minutes onto my commute, as does leaving the office a little later. So, my normal 40 minute drive takes closer to an hour. Once I get a new car (yea, still looking, but I think I found my dream car the other day!), I don't think I'll mind the commute as much since I won't be putting $100 in the gas tank every week.

Steph - I work for a conferencing company - we provide audio, web and video conferencing services to companies.  I actually started out in the office for a little over a year, and when my company was bought out my new boss transitioned me to work from home full time, then they closed the office I was in, and the next closest office is 2+ hours away with traffic.  I sort of lucked out with being able to work from home as almost all the work from home employees were sent back into an office a few months back - because I dont have a "nearby" office I maintained my work from home position.

  • I think it would be nice if everyone included their field of work in their answer too, just so we can understand a little better, and because I'm nosey/curious.

I'm a CPA, and I prepare tax returns.  Currently, I do small businesses and individuals, but I'm about to go to a large corporation with several subsidiaries, and I'll be doing those tax returns.

  • I think I answered "satisfied but it's not my dream job"...with the caveat that I have no idea what my dream job would be!

I am a computer systems auditor in the pharmaceutical industry focused on systems that are used to support clinical trials.

  • I am an editor/writer... the perfect career to work from home. And yet for some reason I am required to be in the office M-F, 9-5. It does help that I have a beautiful office with a view but some days I really, really, REALLY would love more flexibility and part-time hours.
  • I chose very satisfied. I am very happy where am I, even on the stressful days I know I am lucky to be there. My dept is great, my boss is great, and I am really good at what I do!!

For reference, I work at a Wine Importer and Distributor. I am a Purchasing Agent there and buy wine from many different countries and some domestic in CA, WA, OR. I analyze our needs based on sales and trends and deal with the wineries directly to place orders for their wine. It is just a great industry!

  • not to mention, I get wine SO cheap!!!! I don't drink much (none these days) but always get wine for friends/family.

so.... wanna be friends? ;)  I am super jealous of your job!

For reference... I'm not sure how to summarize my job.  I work for a large public University (ok, the only large public University in Minnesota. haha) in the Housing offices.  My job is currently a split position, but I work about 25% with the off-campus housing relations.  So working with landlords, etc and managing our listing service (apartment ads, basically), doing customer service and tech support for that.  THe other 75% of my job is working with summer conferences doing contracts, billing, and tech support for our programs that manage reservations. (We can get over 10,000 people in in the summer; we have about 5,000 beds and conference season is about 14 weeks long.)
