Andy and I have started talking about planning our summer vacation (well, spring probably - late May or June).
We want to go for at least a week, maybe 2. Or we could do 2 separate vacations and make them a week each.
Could be in the U.S. - could be abroad. We're open.
I'm looking for ideas ... where have you been that you loved?
Go.

Re: vacation ideas?
Favorite places have been Hawaii and pretty much any campground. Camping is usually our R&R time.
I can't imagine being open to anything - we have a long list of must-see places! What types of activities do you like to do or where have you gone before that you enjoyed? That might help you narrow it down.
Faves in the U.S.: Whitewater rafting for 4 days. Memphis (loved the civil rights sights and the music). Dauphin Island on the Gulf of MX(we rented a beach house for the week and it was sooo relaxing).
International: France - I liked Nice and Chamonix in the French Alps. I wasn't really a fan of Paris. London. Akumal, Mexico.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
We loved Peru when we went in January, we spent 11 days there and saw so much. We visited Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes, and Machu Picchu.
New York City I would love to do again. Puerto Rico was awesome and afordable. And of course Mexico!
San Francisco, Paris, and London are on our list of trips to do within the next year or two.
Like PP...what are you looking to do. Adventerous or relax?
I went to the Florida Keys a couple years ago and it was awesome. I've heard Costa Rica is a nice adventerous place. FI and I have a whole list of places to go...you should just start a list so you always have ideas!
Let us know when you decide where to go and how it went.
I like some of these ideas!
As for the types of things we like to do ... pretty much anything other than laying around at a beach all day. And golf ... we don't golf. We love cultural experiences - new food, museums, theatre/arts, music, etc. Outdoor adventures are fun. Basically, we like to have things to keep us busy.
We already have a 4-day camping trip planned with my family and a 3-day camping weekend planned with Andy's family, so I think we'll have enough camping in between those two trips.
So far, some of the ideas that I or Andy have suggested are:
Cruise from Seattle to Alaska (neither of us have been on a cruise before - any tips or recommendations there?)
Italy (Andy lived there for almost 3 years when he was in the Air Force, so it wouldn't be new to him, but would be new to me)
Memphis (Andy keeps bringing this one up, but I'm not sure there's enough there to keep us entertained for a full week. I've heard Beale Street is great)
Boston & Cape Cod (maybe 4-5 days in Boston, and then another 3-4 on the Cape? I've been to the Cape before and enjoyed it, but neither of us has been to Boston)
San Francisco/Napa Valley (we both like it, but have both been there before so it wouldn't be new to either of us)
Hawaii (are there enough activities there to keep us busy if we don't want to spend our days laying around the beach?)
Norway/Sweden (we've been to Norway before and LOVED it, but we've never been to Sweden ... Scandinavia is very expensive though)
Washington DC (I've never been, but really want to go there at some point)
Any comments about these options?

Just went to DC for the first time last week - it was for work so sight seeing was not to much. Pretty cool though. You can go to all these exotic places with all this old architecture and think this is amazing - well I walked about a block around the Vietnam wall and there was tons of old amazing things.
I would not go there for two weeks and I am not sure I would do it for a full week either. I think 3 days would do me.
I have heard you should go when the cherry blossoms are blooming (unless you are allergic) and this happens late March early April.
There is absolutely enough to do. DH and I went for 5 days and we could have easily added at least 4 or 5 more. We went to Graceland, the Civil Rights Museum (we had the most amazing tour that lasted a good 3 - 4 hours and it could have gone longer. The guide was awesome.), Gibson guitar factory, Sun Studio, Stax recording studio/museum, a house that was probably part of the underground railroad, walked around downtown. Beale Street was so fun and the music was incredible. We were going pretty much all the time.
I wish we could have gone to the Cotton Museum, Pink Palace, Rock and Soul Museum and done day trips to see the Jack Daniels distillery, Alex Haley house (where Roots was written) and go on a plantation tour.
I spent a week on Hawaii and we sat on the beach for a day. The rest of the time was hiking and doing touristy stuff. I'd love to go to Kauai....seems like a great island for lot of outdoor adventure stuff.
