Challenge #2

Dana looked up to see Alex walking right up to her desk, which was odd since she usually liked to bark orders while standing in the doorway to Dana?s office.  She looked hesitant, almost nervous, as she took a seat in one of Dana?s guest chairs.  ?I wanted to talk to you about the work you?ve been doing with the guardianship case,? She said.  ?I spoke to the county attorney?s office and they are quite impressed with you.?  There was a tone of surprise in her voice.  In the five years Dana had known her, the only sincere compliments she had received was on her Gucci wallet - a perfectly impractical graduation gift from her mother.

Dana didn?t know what to say.  Why was Alex being so nice to her?  Why was she even sitting down opposite her desk instead of summoning Dana to hers? ?Yes, thank you,? she responded, ?it has been a rewarding experience for me.?  As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Dana realized how true they were.  Reggie could be unbearable sometimes and it saddened her to think how hard his life had been, yet helping him and his family had made her feel purposeful; like she was living up to her childhood dream.  She realized how lucky she was that Alex had given her the opportunity and added, ?thank you so much for allowing me to take the guardianship course.  I?m really learning a lot.?

?Yes,? Alex said, smiling, ?from what the county attorney says, you?re really going above and beyond as the boy Ricky?s guardian.?

?Reggie,? Dana corrected.

?Yes, Reggie,? Alex continued.  ?Taking him bowling.  Helping expedite his mother?s Social Security application.  Arranging a family reunion with a long lost grandmother?? As Alex recited the list of Dana?s accomplishments, the tone in her voice changed subtly from admiration to almost disbelief.  It was true, Dana thought, that some of the things she had done for Reggie?s case may seem unusual out of context, but she was certain every one of them was necessary to help find the best home situation for Reggie.  She wondered where Alex was going with this conversation.  Did she want Dana to take on another guardianship case since it was gaining good will for the firm?  Was she finally going to give her a raise?

?I just wonder.....? Alex let her words hang in the air while Dana waited for what was to come next, ?how many new clients have you brought to the firm this month while you?ve been....bowling??  She smiled as if this was a polite inquiry, not the accusation that it was.  Her words cut into Dana?s heart, but she knew Alex was right.  She had been so busy with Reggie?s home life - not to mention her love life - that building the firm?s clientele had been the last thing on her mind.  In reality, the only new ?client? she had worked with had been helping to navigate Mark?s landlord issue, and that too was pro-bono.

?Only one new client so far this month,? Dana lied, ?but I have several leads I?m following up on.?  This wasn?t entirely untrue as she suspected several of the women in her ?Your Amicable Divorce? class had divorces that were anything but amicable based on recent class questions.  ?I know this pro bono case has taken up a lot of my time,? she explained, ?but it will be resolved soon.? she promised.

?See that it is,? Alex ordered as she got up from her seat.  ?We wouldn?t want you to waste all your potential playing babysitter,? she said as she walked out the door.  Her words stung Dana, who tried to maintain a straight face while all she wanted to do was crawl under her desk and cry.

Re: Challenge #2

  • Same protagonist as my first challenge.  Dana is an attorney who dislikes her boss, Alex.  She is working on a pro bono case for a boy named Reggie and dating a guy named Mark.  Hope that helps explain.

  • Very good!  I can't tell you how many times I've run into that same tone in the office myself.

Thanks!  That's good you can relate to it.  It's actually been a while since I've had a mean boss so I'm struggling with her portrayal a little in other parts of the story.
